Good morning, all. I'm going to pick up my 1972 $2K 21' Outrage Saturday. Really excited!! When I posted the tread about the value of the boat, someone asked if the 175 merc was a 1972 as well.
I did some surfing and found this site which may be a good source for this site:

Based on the chart, the 175 Merc on my boat has to be at least a 1976. I will know for sure on Saturday. I'm hoping for a good engine since I know the person took good care of the boat ... but with what I'm paying for the boat a new engine wouldn't be out of the question. I'll comment and post more once I pick the boat up. Have a good day.
Loch,
John's old Mercury website has a list of serial numbers and date references that should prove helpful.
I had a 175 Black Max of that vintage. It would scream on the 22' Aquasport I had at the time. At wot it would sometimes just stop like you turned off the switch. What a jolt. Turned out to be a loose ground on the electronic ignition box. It also would tear the fuel pump diaphram on a regular basis. I never did find out what the problem was. Besides that it performed very well.
