The last time out the motor ran great but ran warm/hot as usual, and the tell tale was weak. Yesterday on a hose it wasn't working at all. I dropped the lower unit and the impellor looks fine. We ran it with the thermostats and their covers off and no water came out. Is there an obvious way to find blockage? Can I put the hose directly on the pick-up tube in the mid section to flush it out? Any advice would be appreciated.

The 2 liter Mercury 135 two stroke has a poppet valve in addition to the thermostat. Have you inspected that?

An impeller may *look* fine but still need replacing. I'd replace it just to rule that out as the problem.

Sorry, I should have given more history. I've replaced both thermostats but they have some build up on them. I've also replaced the impeller and poppet valve, along with all visable hoses.
thanks.

I'm much closer now. I put a hose to one thermostat opening and waited until it came out of the other one...very little came out of the lower unit. So I dropped the lower unit and put a hose to the pick up tube that runs from the lower unit to the power head. It took a while for it all to fill up but eventually water poured out of the thermostat openings. So the culprit is either the impeller assembly or a block before it...I hope.

Any chance you put the impeller in with the vanes turned the wrong way?

I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

Possible. Also possible I left out the key. But I also put the muffs and hose on the lower unit without the water pump cover on and no water came out of the pump. The impellor isn't cooperating, it raises about 3/16" then won't budge. thanks

I would think that a hose on the muffs might not create a lot of pressure. I always think of it as just flooding the impeller so it can pump. Have you ever seen guys run a motor with no water because they think the power head will not beat up.. They do not know about friction on the impeller.

If you are pretty sure you did not put the key way in that would explain why you did not have pressure even on the muffs. Might explain why it is being a pain to get off as well.

jflots, my neighbor has a mid 90's 135 merc on an old smokercraft. He used a "salt away" type product and it corrected his overheating issue. The cooling surface in the heads had become caked with crapola. A significant amount of sediment was removed. I offer the advise, because I personally saw it (and suggested it). Its cheap to try. You have do submerge the lower in a deep garbage can so the cooling pressure gets to the top of the heads. He also revived an old suzuki 90 this way as well. Kinda like vinegar through the coffee maker, the physics are there.

I "hammer and chiseled" the impeller off during lunch and the keyway is there. Interesting the hub in the impeller is a fiberglass tube. I've tried saltaway before using the hose-mount adapter. It foamed like is was supposed to do but I don't know if it helped. There was quite a bit of sediment on the thermostats so it could be elsewhere. I'm getting a new impeller and putting back together this evening. I'll see what we have for large trash cans. thanks.
