1984 200 hp merc black max on a 1984 18' outrage,,,,to much?

I recently purchased a 1984 outrage with a 1984 200 hp black max. I'm pretty sure this is how it came.
I know the specs call for for 150hp max. I haven't put the boat in the water yet...do I have too much motor?

It depends on you and who else is driving the boat. But then i put at 175HP on my 18 Outrage.

Questions you might run into are insurance if the boat specs plate rates it for 200HP.
If you can get insurance and if the 200HP runs OK, leave it alone. Cost a lot to change it.
On the flip side, 150HP Four Stroke would be soooo quiet and at least double your fuel efficiency and no smoke and oil mess.

Thanks......It's in the shop now.bring ckecked out. if it all checks out good i leave alone. I hear you on the smoke thing. i hate that smell. hopefully with 200 hp i can leave it in the dust. i was worried about the weight being to heavy for the tansom. it looks good .no cracks or checks so I'll keep my fingers crossed....thanks for the feed back

I purchased a 1989 Outrage 22 with 1989 BlackMax 115 twins. 1600 hours on the engines by the previous, original owner. I got two seasons of them before one broke down.
When you buy a boat that old, you have to budget for new engines (good used engine even). Key is if the hull is sound. On old Whalers that mostly means has foam become saturated with water. If it has, not really worth investing. You can weight it to figure out the water issue. How far off original weight is usually water in the foam.
Problem with the smoke is most of spend a lot of time just puttering around, fishing or sightseeing.

the motor 554 hours on it. It started right up after a few cranks. it hasn't been in the water in 5 years. cut the fuel line and used a small gas can to test the motor .tested forward an reverse. everything checked out. the hull is in beautiful shape.. gel coat looks good for 40 year old boat. the teak has to small cracks but is in good shape .should clean up fine. this is my dream boat. we fish the sea of cortez in baja. twice a year we caravan with a group of fishing fools all the way down to the tip. cabo....got to get this rig ready for our november trip... I'll weigh the boat when i get it back ...thats a good idea . being out of the water for 5 years I'm sure its as dry as it can be....

554 hours seems low so I'd be the engines in good shape as long as it was stored OK. You might have to put up with the smoke and oiling for another 10 years...spending all the money on other stuff. Nice thing is going to Cabo with it, you can get the older engines serviced.

Number of hours doesn't matter, check the compression. If it's fairly even across all the cylinders you should be good for awhile, if it's not you can still get a couple years possibly.
As for insurance, that should be no problem. Just tell your agent what boat and what HP. If you run into issues, just post a message, there are several insurance agents here that can find you a policy

Sounds like a lot of fun with the 200 h.p. If you are running in the ocean you probably wont get to open it up much anyway.
