This is a shot in the dark but does anyone here have experience with checking the Throttle Position Sensor readings on an early 1990s model Yamaha engine? Specifically I have a 1990 225 HP Yamaha (model: 225ETXD) and I'd like to check the idle readings before I attempt to start it. I cleaned the carbs on the engine a couple weeks ago and I'm not 100% confident that I'm not 180 degrees off as I had some trouble re-installing the sensor.

If anyone could send me the specs and which pins I'd need to check with my multimeter, I sure would appreciate it. I have a factory manual on order but am not sure it will be in before I work on the boat this weekend.

Thanks!

John

When checking the tps I would unplug it from the harness, I would think there are only two wires for it if it is a variable resister. you want to see a nice smooth increase/decrease. my meter has numerical readout but it also has a simulated analog bar that moves and that is where I would look to see it be smooth. check min and max resistance also.

Thanks Bill. This is probably a dumb question but the tps shaft does not have a stop. I can turn it at least 360 degrees so when I check the tps, should I turn the shaft until I see the lowest reading and that should resolve to an idle speed or is there a specific idle reading I should look for?

Forgive my ignorance with this as this is the first engine I have worked on that has a TPS.

Thanks

John

huh, may want to wait and see what the manual says on that one as far as min and max numbers. dumb answers are more dumb than dumb questions so hopefully someone with a little more specific knowledge will chime in.
