I lost my steering on my last outing, the engine just got stuck on the end of a turn (shoulda greased), and after freeing it, the wheel pretty much spun in its own. Is replacing the steering cable something I can do with limited tools? How much is this job likely to cost for parts and labor? I gotta get back out there!
If the cable moves freely now, then it is probably not your cable.
The steering push rod is probably stiff inside the engine tilt tube. That's usually the part that freezes if the cable is OK....
Take the cable off at the engine end along with the push rod...
1. At this time, make sure the cable works freely buy turning the steering wheel.
2. Also turn the engine back and forth by hand and make sure the engine turns freely.
If both of the above are free, then clean out the inside of the engine tilt tube and reinstall the cable and push rod... Grease the push rod and engine tilt tube up good....
You should be good to go...
I just wanted to add to what "Joe" said (sorry for the sub-lecture interjection Joe), but, our whaler's are so low to the back of the water, that constant greasing of the tilt tube, and pivot tube, are pretty much a "WEEKLY" thing, to keep everything running smooth. Back splash is a problem for us.
