I'm sure it's strong enough for your stated purpose.
To know if the truck is suitable for day to day towing chores you should put your Montauk on a certified scale while it is loaded with all the equipment and fuel you normally carry. Once you have the weight you can check it against the manufacturers towing and load capacities.
I own two current Tacoma's: one access cab 4x4 4.0 manual trans, and one access cab 4x4 2.7 manual trans.
The 2.7 is rated to tow 3500#, which is enough to tow an Outrage 18, so is for sure enough truck to tow a Montauk 17, but It will be pretty slow if your area is hilly or mountainous. If you live in flat country, I think it would be fine.
Two more notes:
- the fuel economy of the 2.7 is consistently 30% better than our V6! With 500# of tools in the box, we consistently get *24mpg here in mountainous BC. While this isn't awesome, the V6 gets *17mpg.
- I found the 5spd manual to be a much better match for the 2.7 than the 4spd auto...the extra ratio changes the 2.7 from dog (auto), to perfectly adequate with the 5spd.
