How much difference should I expect in fuel economy, if any, between a 50 hp difference in what is basically the same 2 motors on the same boat? I am about to pull the trigger on a couple of new counter-rotating 300's for the 27, but I am hesitating because I really need to get the most range out of my single 175 gallon tank. The current 1989 2 strokes that are on the boat will give a range about 150-200 miles and I am thinking of adding 1 more tank to the boat. I was thinking I might be able to avoid this if I went with modern 4 stroke power, but I think I want to max the hp to the 600 the boat is rated for.
Go to the Yamaha Outboard Website Performance Bullentin Section (See below link) and look for an offshore boat similar in design/weight as your Whaler model & compare fuel efficiency numbers for both engines if provided. Good Luck!
There will be very little difference in mileage at cruise - the 300s will burn more per hour but be a bit faster. The 300s will burn a little more at WOT, but not a lot.
Thanks for the info, I think that is right after looking at the link suggested. I just went ahead and got the 300's, if I have to put another tank on the boat later, I will.
