I have a general question and once again I am clueless when it comes to engines. I have 90 hp 1985 Yamaha 2 stroke. I have to add 2 stroke oil to the gas which is a pain in the neck. Can i convert this engine to an oil injected engine? Do they make a kit to do this if so how much would it cost? Would it be worth doing or not doing? thanks Sean
I recently had a 1984 Yamaha 90 HP and it had an oil tank inside the engine cowling with a fill cap on top of the cowling. Many people have begun to mix the oil in the gas instead of using the oil injection system. I think it would be pretty expensive to convert your engine even if it is possible. As long as you have the oil mixed in the gas you don't have to worry about the oil injection system crapping out and ruining the engine.
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.
oil injection systems are extremely reliable, much more reliable than a human mixing it properly. Most bad opinions of oil injection are made by people who "had a friend who's oil injection failed" and are not actually based in reality.
back to the subject at hand... is the oil metering pump still on your engine? If so it should not be hard to convert it back.
As I recall OMC once made a portable tank with a system called "accumix" that had two chambers, one for the gas, and one for the oil. The tank somehow automatically sent the correct pre mix to the motor,or not...
