Good morning- I'm planning to repower our Classic; the 1970s era 35hp Johnson is tired. I ran across info on the new Suzuki EFI 4 stroke 20 hp (106 lbs). Any opinion so how the boat will perform?
The boat is primarily a dinghy, and sees duty as a fishing/crabbing platform.

Thanks, Joe. I was hoping that somebody has real world performance data on a 20hp 4s mounted to a 13" classic.....

A 13' with a tiller 15hp will do about 20mph with one person it (no trim). So a 20 should do better than that. If it has power trim/tilt I would expect the top speed to be a little over 25 mph. A 25hp 13' whaler trimmed out will do high 20's.
I remember growing up as kid as local guy had a 20hp merc on a 13'. If he had the boat fully loaded with people it would not plane off.

I have a 20hp Honda Four Stroke on my 13'. I went with lower hp as my kids were operating the boat at the time. The pro's - it will run a long time on a six gallon tank. The con's - Tops out around 23-25mph. The kids have pulled a kneeboard with it - but you would never be able to pull a waterskier, wakeboard or tube of any size. My kids are old enough for more HP now but we have stuck with the 20 for the time being.
Of note - ours has power tilt but not trim - Having power trim would be nice.

My 1966 has a 25hp Mercury 4 stroke. With just me (6 ft, 180 lbs) it will go 30-32 mph wide open. With 3 or 4 adults its a dog, but I mostly fish alone or with one other and its very good I think.

Take a look at the Tohatsu 40 hp TLDI 2-stroke. My personal page shows pictures. It is a good match.
