I am aquiring a 1989 17ft Montauk and the steering cable is frozen. I am wondering what kind of cable I need and where I can get it. As far as I know it is the original cable. Thanks!

Teleflex steering cables are standard.

You can check out this article on rigging lengths.

A 17' cable will give you a tight bend which was used on early models.
An 18' cable will give you more of a larger bend which is what most Classic Montauk 17's use now.

Either one will work... Your choice on which length cable you want to use.

A good place to buy cables is from Surplus Unlimited.

Thanks for the info. Is it rack steering or rotary? Is it the ssc-124 cable or the SSC-62?

The SSC-62 will fit the Safe-T "TS" helms which is probably what you have if it is original.
You may also need the QC-II Convertor which is a quick disconnect for the cable on the helm end.
This newer style cable no longer has a large nut on the helm end, just the engine end.
If you have a large threaded nut that screws the cable into the helm under the console, then you will need the adaptor.

Also see this new article for the length of steering cables.

I just changed out mine with a teleflex 17' with the QC adapter and had no problems with the length. Mine is a 1980 model. By the way, putting the new cable in was much easier than getting the old one out!

Great!!! I went ahead and ordered the 18 footer and the QC adapter. I am bringing the boat back to Georgia from Virginia this weekend and I am going to try like hell to get it going for the following weekend. I have to clean the carbs, change the impeller and replace the thermostat on the motor and replace the cable on the boat....lots to do!!
