I picked up a 17 Montauk couple weeks ago. The guy was short on cash for the sale and had a top from another Montauk he sold. Its a Mills top and forward shelter (2 pieces), it also has what looks like winshield and side windows. Does anyone have one of these? I would love to see what it looks like assembled (so I can try to install on my boat). I also have a question. Is the tubing usually alum on these? I know SS would be more durable and heavier.
Thanks and if anyone has pictures or can snap some and or had instructions, it would be much appreciated.
Rich

The shelter and curtains are quite different if it's a classic Montauk.
On the classic hull, the shelter falls INSIDE the boat, and the interior is protected from moisture with a weather cloth. The flying top is lower and the windshield and side curtains are smaller.
Pat Henehan (Home Aside) has photos online showing his canvas for his 1982 Montauk (now sold). I believe it is up on photobucket and do a search for Home Aside or Homeaside.
Here's one with the shelter and flying top up: Pat's Montauk

Roger,
That photo is of an after market canvas... NOT Mills....
Rich,
Mills had two types of tubing. Aluminum and Stainless Steel.
Sounds like you got a good deal on the boat and the canvas...
You folks need to start looking at all the downloads we have on this site as we have the Installation Instructions for the Mills Canvas for the 17' models already listed and waiting to be downloaded.... These downloads feel lonely when no one looks at them...

Thanks guys, Pats Whaler looks like the one I have. I also have the 3 clear pieces (windsheild and small side curtains). I checked my Montauk and inside the gunnale, there are two sets of teak blocks (1"x1"x5" and screw holes where I guess a top was mounted. The seller said the top did not come with this boat, but I suspect it had a similar setup installed previously...Could make my job a bit easier. This setup looks like a nice option and glad I was able to wrangle it in the deal.
I will take some pictures when I get a chance.
Thanks

Rich,
It sounds like that boat already had a Mills canvas at one time.
If you have the 4 blocks with mounts, 2 on each side of your boat, then that is where the rails for the top connect to.

Roger,
That is not true....
Everything helps... Now everyone knows that the first photo you showed us was for a Montauk 170..
The second photo you showed us was an after market canvas.
Now everyone knows the difference....
So, thanks for the help....

Don't take that sad smiley serious. I'm cracking up over here.
I learn by trying to help too.
Boston Whaler is new to me, but I'm learning fast.
