I've received two bids for the purchase and install of a new Evinrude E90DSL mounted to my 1984 Montauk 17 including new controls and cables and I-command gauges. Prices received, including tax are $11750.00 (of which $632 is tax) and $12238.00 (of which 678 is tax). My question is, does this seem reasonable or out of line? These two prices are from authorized Evinrude dealers in southwest Michigan, the first being from Vans Sport Center in Grand Rapids, MI and the second from JD's Marina in Watervliet, MI.

I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

It sounds high to me. I'm in the process of re-powering with the same engine for a lot less. I signed up before the free rigging deal expired mar 31 so I think that makes a difference but I would have still thought you could do under 10k at least. I emailed about a dozen dealers in my area (RI and MA) and went with one that was $1k less than the others. I found good reviews on the Hull Truth for them and so far they have been good to work with - price isn't everything. Good luck.

As I noted in a PM, that is a lot higher than what I'm paying in Massachusetts. Are those your only dealer options within reasonable distance?

Are you sure the specifications and equipment are identical?
I suggest asking for detailed line items and part #'s for the cables, gauges, throttle et al. Makes comparisons easier.
While 2 hrs away, I strongly urge you to call or visit Lockman's Hardware and Boats in Detroit. They have very good service and installation and appreciate Whalers.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm not so concerned about the difference in prices as about the general amount. Is this really a ballpark figure for a new outboard motor? I will contact Lockemans, Phil, though that is all the way on the other side of the state and I don't want to go that far. I'm thinking of looking at the Yamaha F70 to see what the price difference is.

I think the quotes are $1100-2000 too high.
Repower quotes provided by dealers are often vague on specifics and descriptions.
"Remove and mount new XXX. Price includes prop and rigging."
I think getting a breakdown that shows the items separated out is how you can truly compare prices. As Sy Syms said "An educated consumer is the best customer"
If there is a $400 difference, are the gauges and/or cables the same? One could include analog, and the other the fancy digital ones.
I read a quote (slightly dated) in the $8700 range from Leader's Marine in Kalamazoo.

Each gauge

Cost to derig (hrs @ X rate)
Cost to mount (hrs @ X rate)

Again, it depends on the dealer. I'm getting a 2013 90 out the door for $8750, including 6.25% tax. Even though it's with standard gauges, that makes your quotes seem very high.

Way too high in our area for ANY 90 hp brand installed, but maybe there is a regional difference in prices, I don't know.

After contacting the two businesses trying to get a better price and failing to get either one to budge at all, I went to a local Yamaha dealer for a price to remove my current engine and replace it with a F70, digital tach and binnacle control. They gave me a price of $10,052 tax included. I feel like there's a price conspiracy going on in southwest Michigan. I'm seriously considering that Yamaha, not only because of price but also because of weight.

Not long ago I checked out pricing on a Merc 90 for my Montauk just so I would know the cost if I ever needed to do it. I do my own engine rigging, and it evidently saves a lot.
I came up with $7200 for the brand new Mercury 90 engine shipped to a local boat shop (where they could receive it and bolt it on for me), $200 for their handling labor, $500 for the entire control package, and no sales tax, since I would buy out of state. Total came to $8000.
Watch out for these new Smart Craft type information gauges. They are EXPENSIVE and run up the cost of an engine considerably. Consider staying with the conventional analog gauges to keep price down.
So to me it looks like the prices you have gotten are outrageous, since you are paying $2000-4000 for sales tax, and unknown amount for high tech gauges, and labor, But for someone who doesn't do this work as a hobby, maybe the Yamaha price, at least, is within reason, but still high. $9000 to 9500 sounds better to me.

If you're thinking about alternatives, why not the Suzuki DF90? I was torn between that and the Etec.

An Evinrude dealer in Portland Oregon quoted me $9,235 for a 2013 E-TEC 90 plus $1,061.25 for mounting, rigging, controls, stainless steel prop, fuel lines, computer test and test run in the river.
That's $10,296.25 all in (there's no sales tax in Oregon)

That's a nice chart Joe. It shows what everybody need to know.
One thing you might add is that on the classic Montauk, Whaler indicated a maximum engine weight of 410#. As we all know, they probably shipped 2000 white Montauks factory installed with the 388# "Mercaha" 4-stroke 90 on them. I don't know what the maximum weight rating on the newer 170 is.

Not sure about the conspiracy, but it may be high. In 2011, I got my F70 out the door for $8000, including rigging, digital tach, binnacle, and WA state tax. To be fair, that was 2 years ago and I think there was a $500(?) factory incentive included.

I just repowered my 1991 Montauk with a 90 hp E-TEC. Used a dealer in Delaware and got mounting, rigging, controls, aluminum prop, fuel lines, computer test and test run in the river for just over 9K

BRP was running a special, free rigging and extended the warranty from 3 years to five years. I think all of that is negotiable and I did get the “Boat Show Price” which everyone knows you can get year round. Also need to add that Delaware is a tax free state and that saved me some money as well.

Just checked the Evinrude web site and they are running the special a little different. Special financing or extended warranty and free rigging on 115-300 hp models. Again I think all of that is negotiable.
