Last Nov/early Dec. I posted that I was going to have the mahogany refinished on my 1961 Nauset 16. I'm not going to repeat the refinishers name here, but he did the same work for me back in the mid 90's, the last time it had a full refinish.
The guy had fallen on hard times and was working independently from another marina. I thought that I would help him out and let him do my refinish work again.
I paid him half and told the guy that I was in no hurry, that a good finish was more important to me than rushing things. I went over to check on his progress once and he had the wood out and had a couple of coats of varish on the wood.
Then it became hard to get in touch with him. He was working part time jobs and most of the time I couldn't get him to answer his cell. But then I'd get through and he assured me that things were progressing well.
My mother had a massive heart attack end of Feb. and I had to travel to St Louis to be with her. The day she passed away, I tried calling to get a status, but more to just get my mind off my Mom.
That was when he told me that he moved my boat to another location about 40 miles away! He said he got kicked out of the shop where he was doing my work because he couldn't get along with the owners wife.
I freaked!!! The main thing I was concerned about was that the boat was still in a secure location, which he assured me it was.
Now I was dealing with two shocks, the loss of my mother and wondering what was going on with my Whaler.
I got back to Houston, and the following week I called every day with no answer. I left a message each day that I wanted to come by Friday afternoon and check on the status. Finally, on Thursday, I called early in the morning and I could tell that I woke him up when he answered. He gave me directions how to get to my boat and said that he would meet me there Friday afternoon.
I found my way to the location, once again it was someone else's shop he was working from, but he wasn't there. The owner of the place told me that my guy was working his part time job at Home Depot and that he knew for a fact that he was at work.
My Whaler was sitting out in the open with my parts piled up in the hull. A couple of pieces were under a canopy, but for the most part it was exposed and left to deteriorate. I was FURIOUS!!!
I hook up to my Whaler and brought her home. Now I need to find someone to fix my guys mess. What a PITA!!!
You can see how nice my Nauset was in my personal page. This is what I found:

Hey spuds, very sorry to hear about your mom, as the boat can be fixed, can't replace a Mom.

I have to dig back, but i know there is a guy in your area, just can't think of his name, that is reputable, and does restorations. Give me a few, and i'll come up with the name, but he is in the Houstan..........ah, just thought of it, Angel, and i'm sure someone will say exactly where he is located.

SPUD, call Craig at Case Boatworks here in Florida. I'll personally keep an eye on it for you, he's doing all my refinish work, custom matching, and modifications. Send me a PM, I'll send you his contact info, he is reasonable too.

Sup spud?

I have never posted on here but read the site almost daily. I'm located in west Houston (1-10 / hwy 6 area).

My project whaler is a 1980 17 ft. montauk with a 1991 Johnson 88 hp spl. I fish near corpus and ask that my fishing partners bring their favorite oars because that's kinda how it's been... Fuse here, battery there etc.. Anyway I think I've got it running right now

I own along with my brothers a commercial woodworking business and if you are interested on some DIY refinishing I can help you through it. We only do commercial work but I wouldn't mind you bringing your whaler to our shop and working together on our boats.

Danny,

Thanks for the offer, but with work and everything I just don't have the time to put into it. I did get several very good references for Superior Marine, in Kemah, Tx. Talked with the guy, but haven't even had time to take it down to him to let him get started. Maybe after my son's wedding on May 11th.

Spuds - Sorry about your deal. If you lived in VA I would help you. I do alot of bright work on sail boats. Give it a try yourself. Lots of good reading out there. Just pick good products to use and DO NOT lisen to anyone from West Marine.

I'm really sorry to hear about your Mom Dennis.

I'm happy to read that you have your Nauset back in your possession! I was fearing a worse outcome.

Duf,

Thanks, I've known Angel for a long time, ever since he used to work for Meek's Marine, the Whaler dealer prior to Marine Max. He does some outstanding work.
We are lucky here in the Houston area to have both Angel and Joe Orlando, who also used to work for Meeks, services available.
But Superior Marine is a true wood working shop. They do a lot of brightwork for some of the big yachts that are in the area.
They are also sponsor of Keels and Wheels, which is being held this weekend in Seabrook, Tx. They think next year I should enter my 52 year old Nauset into Keels and Wheels, after they get it put back together of course.
