There were only a couple of times in smooth water that I wished I had a 90 but then I would have had to pay the price. Member Personal Page Posts: 4280 Comments: 7 Joined: 09/30/05	70 HP is fully twice the minimum horsepower rating for the classic Montauk, so yes, I think it is actually more than adequate. 70 HP is also adequate for the 1973-1985 17' Montauk. I owned a 1980 Montauk with a 1985 Johnson 70 HP and it was more than adequate...but I still repowered it with a 1986 Jonson 90. The 90 was more fun.
