Hi everyone,
i've finally bought my first whaler: a very nice 13 sport from the eighties.
I would like to ask you suggestion on which engine to pick:
I need a modern 4 stroke since here in Italy we cant install 2 stroke engines no more due to anti-pollution laws.
Do you think it would be better to put a Mercury EFI 30 or a Mercury EFI 40 ?
The 30hp weights 172 lbs, while the 40hp weights 216 lbs, price is quite similar.
I like speed but i'm afraid of overweighting the transom, what would you do if you were walking in my shoes?

Those weights are for the Short Shaft version.
Your 1980's model takes a Long Shaft version.
You will need to add about 5 or more pounds for the long shaft version.
Mercury is one manufacturer that doesn't like to tell us what there Long version weighs. Most other manufacturers list the weights of their different length motors.

It always helps us if you give us the exact year of your boat so it can be searched and found later by the year using the Search feature.

Can you please post a link showing us the law in Italy about this?
I have not heard about this before.
Or are you referring to older 2 strokes only?

Hi Joe, thank you for your prompt reply!
I forgot to say it's a hull asking for a short shaft engine for sure, it has the cutout transom.
Maybe it's an older model manufactured in the US during the 70's and sold here in Italy years later ( in Italy BW was distributed by a parallel import company and this was quite a normal issue).
My transom looks like this one:

You should have a Stencil number and/or HIN number on the boat to tell us the exact year.

Also, see the 1974 and 1997 Sport on this list showing pawpaw and hasatozgur boat with photo links.

Give us the numbers so we can tell you the exact year.

Here you can't buy a 2 Stroke engine over no more: you can buy only motors accomplishing 2003/44/CE regulation ( for the 2-stroke: evinrude e-tec or tohatsu TLDI only)
This doesn't apply if you're a professional user like a professional fisherman or watertaxi service and so on.
This regulation ask for certain emission and noise levels, that are not meet by old-school lightweight 2 stroke engines with carburettors, like some yamaha, tohatsu or selva, merc professional and so on.
"I motori fuoribordo 2T a carburatori non sono destinati all’installazione su imbarcazioni da diporto all'interno dell'Unione Europea, in quanto non sono stati certificati per la conformità ai requisiti sulle emissioni di scarico e rumore della direttiva 1994/25/CE come modificata dalla direttiva 2003/44/CE relativa alle imbarcazioni da diporto."

I see.
Yes, it appears you can buy 2 stroke motors as long as they are the clean new strokes and comply with the regulations. Like E-Tec or Tohatsu.
Any link to the 2003/44/CE ?

Hi Joe...thank you for your help!
When i saw the boat i couldn't find the year since the HIN was hidden somewhere under the paintjob... And at the moment i cant look closer any further because the boat at the moment is still in the seller's warehouse!
Your photo-archive is gold! I will send you the pics of my boat as soon as i can take some... My transom look like these overseas version you suggested!

Exactly!
And E-tec and tohatsu in this power range weights and costs more or equal comparing to the merc 4 strokes...
Good luck and welcome to the clear european laws system

Typical document only a lawyer could understand or even want to read in its entirety.
I came across this from BRP to expand their dealerships in Italy.
http://www.brp.com/en-us/company/news...work-italy
Just wanted to make sure Italy didn't ban all 2 stroke motors which it seems they haven't. Only selling the (new) older 2 strokes seems to be the case just like the in US. (within some states etc.)
Good Luck with your new Mercury motor whichever you choose.
