Over the weekend I went to change the lower unit oil on my new motor (2000 Johnson 115) and about a cup of water came out of the drain plug before the rest of the milky lube. I don't know how long the motor had sat before I bought it. The prop was dinged up and was going to need to go to the prop shop to get some attention so I pulled the prop at lunch and found a wad of fishing line back there. The thrust washer seems stuck but I did not have time to try to free it. I plan to do that tonight. My questions are- Should I just assume that the shaft seal is bad and take it to the shop or should I just dig out all the line and run it to see if I take on water in lower unit again. Also, the prop that came on it is a Vortex and the numbers on the prop are 13 7/8x17. Is this what I should have on it or something else? Thanks for any advice.

Most likly the seal is shot from the fishing line. I would have it replaced.

If there is water intrusion you need to have the seal changed, The mechanic should also pressure check the foot and make sure that is where the water came from.

Where else could the water have come from?

The fishing line probably did destroy your seal. That is pretty common. But a hair line crack or even somone not sealing the fill screw. I was just saying if you have the seal changed and a pressure test you will know your foot is ok.

That does make the most sense. I will pull the foot and bring it in for service. Thanks.
