I had the opportunity to go to Cape Cod over the past few days to visit with my mom in Yarmouth , Ma. However , this time after being Whalerized, it was a must to seek out Nauset Marine in Orleans. As you know, one of the oldest whaler places in the country. Well, my brother and I walked the boatyard to look at all the whalers we could see..shrink wrapped, uncovered works in progress, winterized and ready for pickup..montalks, dauntless, outrages, all various sized..It was great.
I had always looked at these so called whalers in the past upon occasion, however , now being an owner, it was more special..with a whole different perspective..
The best one was a 17 foot montalk cut in half raised up on a platform roadside, for the world to see ! I had seen them in the pictures, but this one was front and center.. very cool
This fifty year old Marine dealership was first class..and the most comprehensive and hospitable yard one could imagine. The folks there were great.
Upon returning to South Yarmouth in the afternoon, my wife, brotherand I walked the beach for exercise..the ocean was perfectly flat..all I could imagine was running the dauntless across to nantucket, some 15 miles out..my brother mentioned that after december first, the local owner of Ship Shops would always have the guys run 2 boats at a time if they were to make the jaunt across durin the winter. The oceans pretty cool now. end of story,,tks for your interest

Nice Whaler Tale Bob, thanks for posting. We spend most of our vacation time further north along the Maine coast in the summer. I have only been bitten by the Whaler bug for a few years now and never really noticed until this past summer just how many Whalers are up in this area. I can spot them along the roads, along side of homes and garages and on the water at 60 MPH and was simply amazed. Years ago as kids we played a game while driving with Mom and Dad called Bug spotting VW Beatles on the road. This summer the wife and I played Whaler and there was no shortage. Small ones to very big ones and from very old to brand new and we got the most points for ones with for sale signs that we spotted. That area is a Treasure Trove for a Whaler enthusiast who is searching for a nice boat, project or even just parts. Just about every used car lot had a Whaler or two on them and we even added a ten point score for Smirkless Montauks Like our own. Too bad we never seem to have enough time to stop and kick a few tires along the way.

Thanks Bob! The pictures of my kids are kind of old.....and my kids have grown significantly since those pictures were taken. We still use the Whaler but not nearly as much as we once did.

You're lucky.....spotting a Whaler in North Texas is a rarity....and with my kids and I, it's like spotting a meteor in the sky at night. "Hey dad!!!! Did you see that Whaler behind the F-150?!?!?!?!"

Which recently would have been easy to do given last night's Geminid Meteor shower!
I saw many a Whaler, big, small, moored, trailered and cruising about when I spent a few days along the Connecticut shoreline this summer. My first BW experience was there back in the 1970's.

I am a bit ignorant to the facts about BW these days. I do know that my Montauk was built at the Rockland MA. factory back in 1974. I have been right through Rockland but never did see a BW factory and don't know if they still produce boats in this location. It would be a nice stop on one of our trips to take a tour and see them being made.

Dear Gamalot, thanks for writing, its always so interesting to hear the others stories. Its true , once youve owned something , one tends to look for them coming down the street, or bay or wherever. It also seems to be a trend here that folks own more than one..my wife would kill me..but I can see myself taking on a project of this kind in the future.
I must research to see if theres a n official whaler museum. I dont know what goes on in rockland mass.. all I know is the current factory is in Florida. Hmmm, sounds like a nice winter field trip..Thanks for bringing it up ! Merrry Christmas

Thanks for the info Dave! A bit off subject but Home Depot and Lowe's are my 2 most favorite stores!

Understood Gary, I think I could walk through blindfolded. But if you had a choice of going into one of those or the Whaler factory for a tour... See what I mean? Same feeling as Bob had above at Nauset.

Yes to all! I think it is a Man Thing. I can enjoy taking the wife to the mall as long as it has a Cabela's, Bass Pro or some other man magnet store to cruise through. I am happy there is not a BW factory anywhere in our travels because while I am on tour it would probably cost me a ton of cash while she is at JC Penny's or some other store of interest to her. I can have a lot of fun at a bait shop but a tour in a BW factory might be at the top of my list and the bottom of hers.

I try to stay away from the big box stores and shop with the locals as much as possible.

Look at the first picture of my personal page. You will see that the tunnels of my boat come right up under the bow rail and it does not have the splash skirt or "Smirk" that was added some time around 1976. Mine is a Smirkless while later models are Smirked. At the top of the boat forum Joe is still searching for the exact hulls and trying to determine the date when the transition took place.
CES, I always liked to support the little guys but they are few and far between up here these days. Only one small ACE within 50 miles but 3 HDs and 2 Lowe's stores within a 25 mile radius.

Is it the HD right off Exit 14?? I've always wondered where in Rockland the factory was located...

Yes, the main Whaler plant was just off Route 3 in Rockland and the Home Depot is now located on that site. There was also a facility in next door Norwell on Route 53, I believe the commercial and military hulls were assembled at that location. Both sites are long gone now. We sometimes saw the factory guys launching and retrieving test boats at the ramp in Scituate Harbor in the 80's...
