At auction today I bought a 1987 Guardian 20 with twin 70 hp Johnsons and a dive door. A retired fire/rescue boat for the City of St. Paul. Overall it's in ok shape but there are some problems though. Particularly some pretty significant cracks in the transom. But when lifting the motors by the skegs/lower units we couldn't detect any bending or deflection of the transom. I don't know if the motors run, but should have them ready to test later today or tomorrow.
I have a lot of inspecting, cleaning and learning about this boat ahead of me. But it will be fun.

Can't wait to see photos of you taking her out for a spin.

Thanks Joe. Will do on the pics. It will have to be soon though, season change and all.
As you know I've been waiting for this boat to come up for sale. I still don't believe I got her.

Both motors run fine, which is a relief.
I'm going to clean her up.
Check on the extent of the damage to the transom and repair it. There is no deflection at all when lifting the motors.
Luckily (I think) they painted the hull sides with a lighter grey paint when they got her and applied the Fire Dept. logos. Where I have removed some of the loose paint the gel coat is beautiful. I plan on trying Peel Away to remove it all and hopefully it will all look as good as what has been revealed so far.

Update -
Replaced the impeller in the port motor.
Replacing the impeller was the easy part of the job. Disconnecting and reconnecting the shift rod from the linkage connection was - exasperating. There was alot of some type of hardened substance on the shaft, most of which we removed. We did a general clean-up on the parts but are saving the more extensive clean-up for this winter when both motors will receive a thorough cleaning and a facelift.
Removed all the remaining FD decals.
What a pain. But it was necessary to prep for the eventual removal of the paint on the hull sides. Upon inspection of the hull sides it looks like there are 2 coats of some type of marine paint covering the gel coat. 1 primer and 1 finish coat. All in all the paint has held up well and leaves some hope that the gel coat may be in good condition underneath.
