Well I will keep this short as I am bit tired from a long day - Just got back home with my new project. A 1974 Boston Whaler 19 Outrage with an OMC Stringer 165 Sterndrive.

After selling my 1973 Outrage 19 to fund our move to Florida I have finally gotten back to where I could take my next Whaler project. I loved the 19 but have always been fond of the sterndrive boats. I found this boat a few hours from my home - been working on buying it for about two weeks - finally closed the deal and brought her home today. I will take a bunch of photos and put them up for all to see.

Here is a quick teaser pic I took in a parking lot on the way home. Yes she needs a bath and to get off the roller trailer...among many other things - but she has no bottom paint and spent most of her life in Wisconsin fresh water.

OMC 165hp Straight 6 - called a stringer - They are notorious for shifting issues. Very unique mount - the drive just tilts for trailering - the whole engine tilts for trim.

Lol - Thanks Jeff - you know me all to well....

Diesel is a strong candidate - I think my current plans are - clean her up, new decals, rubrail insert (hoping red - maybe a new group order) , wood - Then use her and see how I really like the ride with the inboard. If she ends up being a good candidate for me - then repower is next.

As I am sanding a 13 footer, very glad I didn't get a 19 foot as a project boat. Can't wait to see her when your done.

my mind started racing with the oil burner idea! Big stack, propane injection, Cummins, you could even source an engine from a kubota or john deere, that is such a great idea Jeff!

Scott -

The woman who purchased Jeff's Newport is a likely candidate to source the red rubrail. I seriously doubt she will be using it/needing it.

Congrats on the new project, and congrats in advance to whomever benefits from your little uh..obsession. Smile

Ive only seen the ss spoke style wheels on these. The wheel does seem appropriate age to the boat - so maybe it was factory or dealer install.

Congrats Scott, I love the boat and it sure looks like a worthy candidate for your loving touch.

On a different note and from a purely personal position, I hate Whalers with the I/O power option. I am not sure what it is but outboards just seem to be easier to work on and they sure do look cool and especially on the big boats where two or three monster motors are hanging off the back.

Will we see a new project album any time soon?

I was thinking about creating a project album - but I will wait until I have clear direction.

I understand the i/o postion. I for one happen to really love them. Dont know why. I guess growing up working on cars I find the basic car type engine very familiar. The drive systems are also pretty simple in nature to me. The cost to replace the engine is also much cheaper than a new outboard. - With all that said they are frowned upon by many and that diminishes their value. I suspect that my restoration of this boat will be a rare case.

Did Boston Whaler make an I/O boat, or is it a custom job?

Boston Whaler has made many, many sterndrive powered boats over the years. The original 19 foot Outrage/Revenge was the first.

Yes they made them both in the Outrage and Revenge of that era. Most of the ones I have seen were powered with the 470 Mercruiser.
