Does anyone know where the friction adjustment is on a Honda throttle?
The throttle on my sister-in-law's Outrage 18 / BF150 is so loose that it slows down by itself as you bounce through waves. And you can't change the trim while underway - every time you go to touch the trim switch you inadvertently move the throttle itself. I don't see any adjustments. Any hints? Thanks.
Tim -- The throttle friction adjustment is in the control, not the outboard. What sort of control is in your sister-in-law's boat?
If she has a Honda brand control, the adjustment screw location will depend on what control is used. On an Outrage I suspect it is a top mount control. If this is the case, you just remove the cover and screw in the friction adjustment screw to get the desired friction. This is explained on page 48 of the Owner's Manual:
Typically on a top mount binnacle control there is a cover that screws into the mounting flange. Remove the screws.
You should see a screw adjacent to the shift arm mechanism.
When making adjustments, proceed methodically. Turn the screw a 1/4 turn. Test friction. If no change, return to original position. Turn 1/4 turn the other way. Test, return to original etc.
If you have a side mount, is it include the key switch or not? Go to www.marine.honda.com to identify the model of shifter. I found a .pdf for a side mount with key switch showing the screw. Do a google search on "Honda throttle friction adjustment". It was the 2nd or 3rd listing.
Thanks guys - it is indeed a Honda brand top mount control. I found the manual you both pointed to and it shows the trick to it - I'll give it a try this weekend.
Thanks very much!
Tom, she also got the prop - won't get a chance to try it for a couple of weeks. The motor is right now mounted 1 hole up. I am thinking to raise it by 1 hole with the new prop, but won't get a chance to do so until the boat is hauled in the fall.
