I would like to re-power my Montauk 17 Merc 90 with a 4 cycle. Any suggestions?

Yamaha 70hp 4 stroke (if 70hp will do you)
E-Tec 90 2 stroke (if you want more power)

What year Montauk do you have? I have a 1992 that came with 90hp Evinrude. After 3000 hrs it was done, so I replaced it in 2006 with 90 4stroke Honda and it's just not the same. So much so that I'm trying to sell the Honda and locate a 90hp Yamaha 2 stroke. The Honda is a fantastic motor just on heavy side for the boat. The extra weight does not allow the boat to trim as it once did. This causes issues in flat water to heavy seas! So if you're not worried about power and want a four stroke stay in the 60-70hp range.

I have the original Evinrude 90 on my 89 Montauk. Can someone tell me what the weight of that engine is ?

I re-powered my 1988 Montauk 17' with a new Yamaha 70hp 4-stk. It has been a great motor so far. Purchased back in December but did not put it in the water till Feb of this year. Gas consumsion is great. With two aboard and full gear I average about a gallon per hour at crusing speed 4500rpms. Pulling a tube/ski about 2 gallons per hour.
At WOT they say I'm running approx 36mph, that's approx 5800 rmps trimmed out correctly. I don't have a speedometer, just RPM gage.
I considered a 90HP Yamaha but the dealer talked me into the 70HP becasue of the nearly 120lbs savings. I'm glad he did. I'm not a speed demon anymore anyway. They say it would have added maybe 5mph but why? 36pmh is fast enough for me.

I have a 1992 montauk with an 2008 etec 90 hp. It is a good combination.

Awesome info hilyert. Im thinking about a Yamaha, and you just helped me lots while wondering if 70 was enough and worrying about the weight of a 90. Not that i do often, but you have no problem getting a skiier up ?
Would you mind giving me a breakdown of your costs ? Motor, rigging, labor, etc ? it would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

I think the original Evinrude 90 is about 310-20 lbs. A modern E-TEC 75 would weigh the same and give you pretty much the same performance. The E-TEC 90 weighs the same as the 75 with a bit more top end speed, but is based on the same block, so hole shot and grunt for pulling skiers is about the same.
On the off-season my local dealer quoted me $7600 for a 75 installed with all rigging plus the trade-in of my old Johnson 90.

I just recently swapped the Yamaha F70LA over to my 1988 Montauk. I am very pleased with the boat and motor combination. I repropped yesterday to lower pitch, which made things even sweeter. I don't have complete numbers with the new prop yet, but with the longer Stiletto 13.25 x 15" I was getting 7.5-8 statute mpg in the 4000rpm range, around 25 statute mph. I have the Yamaha NEMA 2000 link from the motor to a Lowrance HDS-7, which is where I collected the data.
Max speed is over 36mph.
It is a great combination, and I do not think you'll feel any lack of power if the motor height and prop are done right.

MY 1988 Montauk needed some work, New stearing cable,new battery, new tach and new motor all for approx $8600.00
As far as skiers go, I'm sure it would pull up one 200 lbs+ slalom skier, or
two doubles with no problem. .

I went with the 13 1/4 x 13" Stiletto Advantage. Seems like a great size for the motor/boat/usage combination.
