How does Mercury create a counter rotating engine?

The arguments are easy to find. One will say it is done with gears, one will say it is done by using reverse as forward, and then there are those who claim the 2 smoker just runs backwards.

How do they do it?

Reason; I have a conventional 1989 Merc 150 BlackMax, with a good powerhead, but the swivel bracket and steering pin are causing some troubles.
I have found a replacement that is a Counter rotating 1992 BlackMax 150 with a bad power head.

First obvious question, will my powerhead fit this newer unit and does this return it to a conventionally rotating motor?

Powerheads turn the same way, the difference is extra gearing in the lower unit.

I converted one of my 1989 standard rotation Mercury 150 motors to a counter rotation motor by simply bolting on the counter rotating lower unit from a 1994 150.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing this for a single on an Outrage 18 though.

Thanks Tom,
I have a good lower unit and a good power head, but the swivel and pin are troubled on my motor and I might be able to add my parts to this later model motor and have a working motor.
I only have small pics to work with at this time, but it looks like another steel steering pin and it was a saltwater motor, so it might be a bad idea anyway.

Thanks gusgus....

I never would have figured that one out....

I also thought it could have been an electrical type of question about how counter rotating engines were wired if differently from the standard rotation.
