Any idea why this prop has sharp corners vers a typical prop? http://www.flickr.com/photos/45988259...578453486/

That's an old Yamaha semi-clesvr design that has been modified or simply gropund down. Here is what a new verison looks like:

Looks like something you would use to grind up sausage or hamburger.

Yea it is scary looking for sure. I am wondering if switching the prop to something different would be beneficial. I use my boat (17" 1985 Montauk) just in the waterways here on the East coast. I really dont go into the ocean. I want a good prop that works well with my motor. What would you all suggest?

There is no question but that a new prop would be profoundly beneficial.

Because we have propped so many Montauks with the two stroke Yamaha 90, I do not think we need to discuss it much.

You'll make good use of a 13-1/4" x 15" Stiletto Advantage 4.25 with a DE-500 hub kit. There is no better prop for the money.

You'll make even better use of that prop if the motor is raised up on the transom.

How and what do you think I will notice the difference with the new prop? Where is the best place to get the one you suggest? Thanks

Well, if you use the recommended prop and raise the motor I think you will gain some top speed, improve your rate of acceleration, reduce the amount of bow rise during acceleration, reduce your steering effort and get better fuel mileage. Some folks who have made this change report their boat feels like a completely different boat.

But other than that, not much.

Spend some time using your new boat with the prop it has. Get to know the boat and also get some GPS speed numbers...then make the change and see how it does.

You can buy the Stiletto Advantage any number of places. Google it and see what comes up. I hear Dan's Discount Props is good.

Yes..... and that is part of the problem and you are not getting the best performance and economy from your motor because of too much drag.

For the Yamaha, probably 2 holes up...

For the newer E-Tec, most have reported all the way up....

See this article for drilling holes if necessary for your 1985 Montauk 17' hull...

Two holes up at the very least and three holes up if the Stiletto Advantage is used.

You'll need to fill those two pesky "blind holes" and drill two new holes on the BIA standard spacing but 6-1/2" below the top holes instead of 8" below the top holes.
