I was just out on my 1985 Montauck with a, i think, 1986 yamaha 90, 2 stroke non-injected engine and the motor ran fine. I noticed the water shooting out of the motor as usual with no problems. When I got home I hooked up the hose and started the motor and I didnt see any water coming out of the motor so I shut it off right away. Does this mean my water pump is shot? I was going to take the boat out in the morning again but dont want to blow it up. any suggestions? I just bought the boat and this is my 3rd time out.

try squeezing the muffs tight against the lower unit to get the water going once water is flowing you can let go. It could of been it wasn't lined up correctly an not getting enough pressure from your hosepipe. A water pump is typically one of those things that is either working or not working, it'll not be an intermittent problem.

Make sure the small hose is clear and not plugged up.
Critters like to build mud nest or whatever in the outlet of these telltale hoses....

Did you give the thermostats time to open? When you first start it it takes a min for the water to work through the head

In my experience little pieces of debris tend to clog the tell-tale. Worth carrying a short length of pipe cleaner and a little length of weed whacker line to help unclog the spout.

i have a yam 75hp. you could also pull the themo housing & flush some more to get foreign bits out of the cooling channels but I would put a new impeller and thermostat on your list of things to do pretty quick.

Read up on your motor. It’s possible your manual may say not to run the motor while on muffs… Opinions vary on this subject.

To answer your question, there is no real way to determine if your water pump impeller is going bad, other than first signs of overheating.
On my Mercurys, at least, I have had perfectly fine telltales showing, and still been in need of a new impeller. As good preventive maintenance, replace impeller about every 3 years AT LEAST.
