I have the new Seastar steering installed including the helm. What is a good angle for the ports exiting the back of the helm so the cables can be routed out of the way? Also, can the cables be suspended out of the way, provided they don't get kinked? Mine currently ended up pointed down to the floor which puts them in front of the door, hard to use the storage that way.
I will post pictures later.
Thanks

Suggestions for getting the hoses out of the way are welcome

The purging is really not too bad. You will need a bucket, 2 xtra pieces of hose to run from the
"out" on the steering mech.
Pull those cover caps off - set to side
Attatch the xtra pieces of hose and dip them in the bucket.
loosen one side for fluid to flow, turn the wheel that direction. when the air stops retighten nut, now to do the other side. When you get no air and good overflow of fluid. Your are finished. Final tighten your lines, recap the overflow ends.
Clean up the Red juice and lets go boating.

I am considering replacing the steering cable with hydraulic. Which model did you go with, cost and how did the install go. This is for a 17 Montauk with a Honda 90
and my wife uses the boat the most.

firstpawn, thanks for the tip. I will try to bleed it again, since I still have some air in there. nice tip about the bucket.
I went with Sea Star because I repowered with a 175HP, but for your application Bay Star from Teleflex would be fine. Do a search for the best price, it should be around $500.

Kamie,
Is it ever nice and clean inside that new console!
What do you have planned for the electrical - fuses, house breaker, etc...?

Kamie,
The Hydraulic systems are no longer a closed system. They have vented plug....
If you have any air left, it should come out after a little use.
There are two basic types of Hydraulic Steering systems that Teleflex sells.
1. Baystar = up to 150 hp
2. Seastar = 150 hp and over
I personally would not put a Baystar on a 150 hp motor. If you read the Teleflex specifications you can come to your own conclusion....

Mike,
Two BlueSea fuse blocks, one for bilge pumps, lights stuff I might want to leave on overnight should I ever go camping and one for electronics. I will take photo's of the wiring, once I clean it all up. Mostly this weekend was getting it done, not making it all pretty.
Joe, I think Teleflex will tell you that it BayStar is fine for 150HP as long as your not running a 150 HO. Since I was going to be above that, it was SeaStar all the way for me.
In Bob's application for a 90HP on a Montauk, I see no reason to spend the money on SeaStar unless you plan to seriously over power. Even with the SeaStar, Teleflex specifically indicates not to use it if the boat is over powered.

Kamie,
The specifications are not that clear from Teleflex...
That is why I said I would leave it up to the individuals own conclusion.
Here is what Teleflex states on their website:
For outboard boats under 150 hp total, BayStar provides hydraulic steering performance for the lower horse power range.
For outboard engine applications over 150 hp, choose one of the SeastarĀ® family of products.
150 hp seems to be the dividing line.
I can't stress this enough where they say "under 150 hp total". To me, this means do NOT use Baystar for 150 hp because they state it should be under 150 hp ....
Again, I will leave this up to the individuals interpretation but I will not put a Baystar on my 150 hp Evinrude mounted on my Boston Whaler....
You made a good choice to go with the Seastar.....

If you ask Teleflex they will tell you that BayStar is fine on a 150 and their materials are in conflict. In some cases they say "up to" 150HP implying that you should not use it for a 150, yet they clearly have instructions for 150HP Outboards in their BayStar installation manual.
I know that folks are using it on 150HP outboards with no issues.
