Here is good news, the summer mail boat has been extended.
A nice story and video of a 1980's Montauk:

What a nice way to spend your summer and get paid for boating.

I've been going to the Belgrade Lakes region for over 50 years... now own a house on the last lake in this Belgrade chain. They even sell rides on the mail boat to the 'summer people'! It is as the sign says when entering Maine... "The way life should be..."
The lakes are great and much of the "On Golden Pond" character abounds there. On July 4th we'll all gather around the back of Day's general store and watch a fabulous fireworks display out in the middle of Long Pond. All of us 'summer people' will clog the 2 lane road through the village for more than an hour leaving after its over. Ain't summer great...???!!!

Nice story and glad to see the service extended and a BW involved. As an aside, we have a bunch of tiny little post offices around here that IMO have no business even staying open. With in ten miles of my home there are at least 7 branch POs and each has it's own Post Master and additional office employees. My mail is delivered by a rural carrier and I rarely ever have to go to the post office. I would be very surprised if a few of these branches serves more than 20 or 30 people a day.
We will be spending 11 days further north up in Rockwood and on Moosehead and Seeboomook Lakes at the end of July. Absolutely gorgeous area and some mighty fine fishing.
