I have an 85 Montauk with an 85 90hp Evenrude. The original binnacle control is just about shot. I am contemplating replacing it with a Morse Control by Teleflex. It seems simple and sturdy and in keeping with the classic appearance of the Montauk. Has anyone else done this? Any potential problems? Is there a better solution?

Thanks

The Morse MT-2/MT-3 are commonly used on the small classic Whalers. The only downside to installing a new MT-3 is you loose the trim/tilt switch under your thumb on the control and will have to rig up a switch elsewhere.

The trim/tilt switch on an OMC binnacle control is a $20 part and very easy to replace with only a screwdriver.

I have one on my Nauset and it looks great. I moved the trim switch beside the iginiton and it is fine.

I highly recommend the super smooth Morse MT-3 control. I made the same conversion on my 25 Outrage with twin Mercury 200 EFI's, and really enjoy the control's operation, clicks and all. The separate trim panels are less convenient, BUT IF YOU HAVE THE DASH SPACE, well worth the extra effort. Here is my installation:

You will also need new cables, and I HIGHLY recommend the Teleflex black EXTREME premium grade. They are the smoothest operating cables on the market, and can be bought in either universal configuration (which requires an engine specific end kit) or specifically for either OMC or Mercury engine ends. Go to Teleflex's site and find out the product number and style you want, then buy them on the web from any number of discounters.

The control comes with the classic red knob, but am using a larger diameter upgraded chrome knob with the red rings. I also had to place a varnished 1/4" teak pad under the control to cover the hole from the previous Mercury unit.
