As a part of my ongoing effort to use my boat more often, I have been addressing several minor maintenance issues. I plan on replacing the water pump impeller next week. I also just drained the 2 cycle oil from the oil tank and want to refill it with fresh oil replacing some of the hardened hoses along the way.

Question: what is the best oil for my precision blend engine. Are the any synthetics to be considered.

Second, is there a way to clean the oil strainer and any other residual oil (possibly 20 years old) from the oil pump? http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/b...oat006.jpg

The absolute best oil you can use for your Yamaha engine is Yamalube. You. An buy it at a Yamaha dealer.

Second on the Yamaha oil, Yes you need to clean out your oil tank and the filter screen, also the on in the engine the tank and screen there as well, I would also blow out all the oil lines with compress air.

Pardon the dumb question....with what do I clean the oil strainer?

And what do I use to flush the oil pump to get rid of any sediment or residue. When I drained the oil tank via the clear hose at the lowest point in the tank (see picture http://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/b...oat006.jpg) I did not get any residue.

I do not want to use any chemical that will damage the precision blend pump or push any contaminants downstream to the carburetors.

I took a look at your link and am impressed at how clean that '91 motor is.

As for your "residue" problem, I have a question......is your motor running okay in it's current condition??? If so, why not just run it as it is...you have fresh oil in her now. Sometimes fixing something that ain't broke only leads to breaking something down the road.
