I'm interested in installing a kicker on my 86 Montauk.
I'm thinking about a 6hp. four stroke, due to weight. The 6hp. being approx. 55lbs. and a 8 or 9.9hp. being approx. 85lbs.
Do any of you run a 6hp. kicker on your Montauk?
If so what kind of performance could I expect. I realize I won't be racing around with a 6hp. But would it be enough hp for trolling and as a backup motor to get in from inshore fishing.

Thank you Joe.
That is a very nice install, very much like the duel controls.
What do you think I could expect performance wise out of a 6hp four stroke as opposed to the 8hp.
Do you think the savings in weight would justify the lower hp or do you think 8hp is the way to go.

LB,

Lighter is better.
6 hp would be good enough for a Montauk but the reason I didn't list them is because most of them are now ONE Cylinder.... Too many reports of excessive vibration from the one cylinder engines for me to even think about trying one. Check with other people that might have one....

I would lean towards the Yamaha F8 if weight were the only criteria....
Or, maybe an older used 2 stroke. One that will match the brand of engine you have now?

What brand is your main engine?
Although not a must, I prefer matching brand engines... Something about it just makes the whole package look nicer. Just my opinion.... Of course I may eat my words when I put a new E-Tec 150 on the back of my Outrage and still have the kicker I have now. When E-Tec comes out with a kicker, which should be soon I hope, then my engines would be matching again.

Joe,

I'm running a Yamaha 90 2 stroke as my main motor.
I like your idea of staying away from one cylinder kickers due to vibration.
Yamaha is now offering a 6hp. four stroke 2 cylinder. I think this is the way to go for me to keep the weight down. I'd like to get more info from you on your duel throttle control and steering linkage set up. That is a very nice set up.

LB,

I try to stay current on what the big engine manufacturers list on their website..
I recently redid my list as engines change every year...

I looked again on the Yamaha website and the F6 and the F8 which I do have listed in my article, states both engines weigh the same. This is why in this case, I would still recommend the F8 hp.....
If you ever moved up in size to a different Whaler you could keep the 8 hp... Something to always keep in mind.....

If you wanted to add dual controls to your console, I would start looking around on eBay for a used, or preferably new, Yamaha Dual Control....

If you didn't want to mortgage your home to buy this newest style, you could still use one of the older versions of the 704 controls although the new "Premium" series would be sweet....

Joe,

Sorry about the confusion on my part on the weights of the Yamaha 6 and 8hp. models. You were right on.
I have been looking at a number of brands and the 55lbs. 6hp four stroke was aTohatsu.

I haven't taken the time to list Tohatsu...
I think they make some engines or parts for Mercury and visa versa.... or something like that. I can't keep up with that.

Anyway, I think Tohatsu is one of the single cylinder jobs if I'm not mistaken... I will have to look at it later unless you already know....

Joe,

Your right the Tohatsu 6hp. is a single cylinder.
I've heard that Tohatsu manufactures Mercury's and Yamaha's small displacement outboads. Don't know the facts on this, but I have been told by more than one source.
Maybe some members can shed some light on this.
