What is the best teak product as I have used several over the years and nothing really holds up to the sun and salt water. Refinishing the gunwhales of a 20' Outrage.

Craig,
Spar has worked VERY well for me in Sunny SW FL.
8-10 coats. let dry well and pay attention to detail.

Just my opinion and the way I'll be going is with a two part type of urethane finish. I talked to a person who used a product called bristol finish on his old Chris craft and even after 5 years it still looks like new. He does keep it out of the sun when not on the water, but claims to use the boat almost every weekend. I have veen heard of people using clear awl grip with great results. No offense to the purists, but varnish is a thing of the past. you may now beat me with your brushes for blasphemy

I have tried most products over the years ... my fave's were "Schooner" & "Captains" varnish.A few months back i stripped all the wood on my 18 Outrage .... I used Sikkens Cetol "Natural Teak",about 5 coats and a final w/ Sikkens Clear..... it came out beautiful !
Bob suggested a urethane two part .. I know a Captain on the west coast that uses LP (linear polyurathane) by Sterling. after 8 - 10 coats of varnish he would apply a coat of CLEAR LP. It
not only protected from UV it also formed a "hard protective shell" .The yacht is chartered quite
a bit so protecting the teak was a priority. He re-coats once a year !
Bob," varnish is a thing of the past" ...? How could you? It's all about effort, appretiation for that classic yacht look, which is why they put it on in the first place and instead of a beating w/ a brush , how about
i dip you in mineral spirits w/my brush
Sterling is a bit pricey but ??? I may try it next year ...

Yea I deserved that for spouting off that blasphemy like that. I can still remember my Uncle always having a can of varnish and sandpaper at hand on his 1969 32' Pacemaker. We would go out to his moorning and eat lunch, while I ate and fished a little, he'd go around the boat and sand and touch up the mahogany. That boat had a LOT of mahogany too. He kept that old wooden boat into his 70's before it got to be too much for him. I think he actually enjoyed scraping, caulking and repainting the bottom every spring. I'm sure he'd have sworn by Spar varnish too

Not Sikkens Cetol.
I just made that mistake. It was incredibly easy to used, I am told is one of the most durable and produced a finish that can only be mimicked by Walmart's finest furnishings.
My opinion...

I would not know what Wal-Mart furnishings look like .......... but i can assure you it does not resemble my Outrage !
60 all the way to 320 grit then 5 coats w/ a final in clear ... 25yrs. of varnish and learning from the best of them .... I will stand for Sikkens "Natural Teak".
Check out the photo gallery ...
Bob, your uncle new what it was all about ,I used to Skipper a 1931 121' Fantail motor yacht in Newport Beach (the music buiz took me on another path)We had a crew that varnished year 'round and caulked those teak decks ... yikes ! For now, i'm happy to re-coat just once a year on my Outrage.

Use Behlen Teak oil and for get about the varnishes....
Once you work up enough coats it seals up like a matte finish poly. It takes about 12 coats but, it will never peel or crack like a cetol, poly, spar, or any other finish. It might need a recoating twice a season in the Southern states. I use it once a year on my outrage and the more I coat the better the finish gets.
