I am cleaning my new Montauk 17 and the motor looks really good. Any advise before I try starting it? Should I put 2 stroke oil in the cylinders and crank it without the plugs? I can turn the flywheel so I know the motor is not locked. It's a 1984 Evinrude 70hp if that matters.

I am not sure I really want to pull the carbs off. Can I try to start it with the carbs being rebuilt?

Pull the plugs, tilt engine all the way up, pour some warm mystery oil in each cylinder leave for 1 hr then crank by hand 20-30 revolutions, then you can crank with starter. reinstall plugs and go for it. I personally would pull the carbs and clean them first, you will probably need to do it anyway and easier to clean if you have not sucked junk gas/water/varnish into the jets. If the engine is good why cause an additional problem. Don't forget water pump impellar, sitting for 4 years probably means it is extremely dry and certainly needs to be done anyway, again why end up with peices of impeller clogging water passages. Cheap preventative maitenance procedures that can make your life so much easier.

I would use marvel mystery oil. You could try and start the engine then, however I would go through the carbs since they have been sitting so long, (jets will be clogged from the old fuel turns to varnish) Get a new fully charge battery, and some starting spray. Check the lower unit for oil, and I would change the water pump. The impeller has been sitting in one place and could have dry rotted, replace with a water pump kit (everything for the pump) and only use a factory water pump. These years (80"s) Evinrudes were some of the best outboards made...good luck to you

I would also check all fuel lines and ensure they not deteriorated from ethonal.
