So, I bought a boat with a frozen(busted) steering cable. I took the cable out, and am now considering replacing it myself and I have some questions:

1. How hard is to replace?
2. How long would it take? (guy who I bought the boat from is going to pay me by the hour)
3. Any recomendations on cable replacements?
4. Am I an a-hole for tyring to do this my self?
5. Any other tips you can give me?

Thank you.

1. Very Simple
You took the old one out, right?
2. 15 to 30 minutes to replace the cable
3. Teleflex is basically the one and only choice I would make
4. You would have to determine if you are an a-hole....
Just about anyone can replace the cable.... even a a-hole...... Grin
5. Make sure the engine tilt tube is clean. Use a wire pipe brush or something similar.
You might even consider replacing the tilt tube with a Stainless Steel version.
Buy the same length of cable you just took out....

Thanks Joe. So one last question...well maybe:

When we took the cable out, we had to undo everything allt hey way to the steering wheel. When I buy a replacement, I need to buy a complete replacement right, so it needs to incdlue the casing that connect to the steering wheel as well?

This is the part I am worried about since it was a bitch to get the cable undone from the casing and out the little hole in the side console.

Is that not going to be an issue when we put it back?

Thanks and as you can tell this is my first "real" boat.

Oh, and the orginal cable is a 11ft Teleflex SSC/211 Oct '87, any insight to the correct replacement would be fantastic.

Okay, I think I figured it out. I am gonna get Safe-T-Quick Steering System 11ft and I think that should work.

Thanks for your help.
