With respect to the seller, please do not inundate his email or phone line with questions about the price.
I have asked if he has had any inquires provided the price - it didn't say that it comes with the truck pictured, so I am still quessing.

Maybe we all need to rethink our sale prices!

If I get a response - I shall share.

You can ask whatever you want, selling it at an inflated price is another thing altogether...
Recession still going strong in Southeastern Michigan!

Recess is still used at the kids school.
This is a nice boat for a nice price if he can get it. However he may be working an angle. Consider this; The wife demands he sell it, he says fine, but I am not going to give it away. She doesn't know whalers from inhalers and he lists it. Valuing it off the chart. Very effectively keeping his boat and making her wonder what she can sell to pay the bills.

The guy is asking about 3X what the boat is worth....especially with that old motor on the back.

I'll pass...lol.

Boat and motor only have 236 hours though. Looks like it it well cared for but someone looking to spend that dough would likely opt for a newer model.

What would it cost to buy a brand new Montauk fully rigged with all the gadgets today?

I agree his price is off the chart but it does appear to be a very nice boat and well cared for and well preserved. Aiming high and leaving some room for negotiations is never a wrong approach and he just might find a buyer who can spend $18-$20K but not afford a new one all dialed in for probably close to $40K. As for the age of the motor I can't argue the point but have to say they are great motors if properly maintained but they are gasaholics.

Looking at it from another point of view, find one of the same vintage that has it's dings and aging and is in need of some refurbishment for say $10K and then see how much time and money it will cost to bring it back to almost showroom condition.

You guys are pretty tough but the fact is it is his boat and he can assign any price he wants to it and it is up to the buyers to decide what it is actually worth. Too bad it is not an old 1963 Vette, split window coupe with an old 396 motor in that kind of condition!

It's easy. If you like/want the boat make an offer. If you're not interested in buying it why be concerned about the price?

The offer to sell probably represents a good value for someone.

The recession is raging on the Central Gulf Coast. The BP disaster has not been a big help, either!

On the other Whaler discussion website there is a thread where the writer says now at Costco they have advertised a brand new 17' Montauk with a 90hp Merc. 4 stroke for $29,700, and they will give you a $500 gift card. The list on the boat is $32900. He claims a better deal may be had at a real whaler dealer.

I agree that a better deal is available from a dealer.

If you can't get 10% off MSRP within 30 minutes just get on-line to another dealer. I would not pay more than 80% of MSRP out the door for any new Whaler.

I might not buy today or tomorrow but within six weeks I almost surely will. Some travel may be involved. And I can do without a store card.

If it is in fact close to 20% or more off MSRP, as you state, I guess the recession is alive and well in your area as well!

I have no idea what the $32,900 price includes. Trailer, covers, Bimini, rod holders, fish finders, radio, stereo and all the other little stuff we seem to take for granted that ends up costing a heap of cash. Nice boats can be had for low dollars right now if you have patients and cash and a will to jump when you see the right one. I would not give this seller anywhere near what he is asking but it will not surprise me if some other buyer does.

I could get 2 0r 3 nice Montauks for the price he is asking. But like a house, for a sale to occur, your price should reasonably match recent similar sales. I found these in a matter of seconds.

You guys are still not getting it. Are you?
He doesn't want to sell it! Due to an estate sale, divorce sale, or simple wives demand, he has done the "usual". It is as common as the wife giving away his stuff while he is away on a fishing trip.
This one simple explanation explains the price and explains why he has not negotiated his price. I applaud him and his ingenuity.

I got it Gusgus and you might be right on the mark but we might never know. He could also be one hell of a salesman and I have seen this ploy used before where the seller sticks a much higher than normal price in hopes of attracting real buyers and warding off the tire kickers who want to go for a boat ride and jerk you around for an afternoon.

I honestly don't care what he asks or what it sells for because, unlike buying a home, the price of a boat is what ever you, the buyer, is comfortable with. Comping boat prices like they do home prices is completely irrelevant unless you are in the same geographical area. His sale will do nothing for other local and comparable sales. Around these parts sellers and sellers agents use terms such as "Motivated Seller" or "Must Sell". This guy does not seem to fit that category. He could however be "Trolling for a sucker".

I like the concept of "Buying low and selling high"!
