Hello-
I am about to repower my 1979 13. I am looking at the Mercury or Tohatsu 25 or 30 HP 4-stroke. The current motor is a 1993 Yamaha 40 HP 2-stroke (model C40ELRR). It is clean, in good condition, and runs well. Does anyone have a ballpark value for this? I would guess $500 maybe???? Thanks for your help.

Why are you re-powering if the motor you have runs well and is in good condition?
You can expect to fetch $500-800 for that motor....maybe more. I'd do a craigslist / eBay search and see what folks are typically asking for same motor.
Yamaha had a great run with those 3 cylinder motors.....they are about bullet proof. I don't think they changed the design at all on the from '86-'96

Thank you for the reply. I thought that someone may ask that question! The main reason I want to repower is to get tilt and trim. I had heard rumors that this may be available for my motor, but haven't found one yet. I also considered the CMC PT-130, but since it's 40 pounds and a 6" setback, I wasn't so sure about that. Also, I like 4-strokes. It's definitely not a cheap alternate which I am considering, but having PTnT is really appealing to me, because I use my boat in a lot of shallow water (tidal creeks in NC). Also, my 40 Yamaha is 2 cylinders. I'm not sure why....I believe it is a commercial model, which is supposedly simpler and easier to maintain (?).

Wow. That's a lot of money just to have power trim. IMO, if you're the least bit mechanically inclined and have the tools (common hand tools) I'd look into finding another mid section that has the trim actuator already in it.
When I first bought my motor, it was crap......the whole midsection was corroded and it snapped on me while in the middle of the lake while with my two little kids a few years back. I ordered a used mid section from a place in minnesota and it was almost in mint condition. That was back in the spring of 2008 and it's been the perfect set up.
Above is just an alternative idea. If you have the means to do a swap, please do so. You may be able to recoup some of your investment selling your old motor.

Yamaha 40 hp 2-stroke is a great motor and will provide you with optimal performance, even without power tilt. My opinion is to stick with your 2 stroke. New motors will weigh lots more, especially if you are looking at at 40 4-stroke.

Thanks to you both. Yes, it is an expensive TnT! After i could not locate a power TnT, I was also told that the power tilt assembly wouldn't work with the bracket which mounts my motor to the transom. True or not, I don't know??? In my neck of the woods, that Yamaha would sell for 1k to 1.5k depending on condition and if it came with controls or not. 500 if it ran but needed work. I think that you could easily get at least 500 from a dealer on a trade in for your new motor.

I have the 25 Merc on my 13' standard, with tilt and trim. I live in coastal SC and wouldn't be without it around here, although I do still run over the occasional oyster bed. I love the 25 Merc, it's a sweet motor.

Boats.net charges $4600 for a remote controlled power trim 25 hp Tohatsu. My local Hingham Mass Tohatsu dealer has a new 3 year old leftover 40 Tohatsu with power trim for $4600. The 25 weighs 182 pounds, The 40 weighs 206 or 26 pounds more.
I know which motor i would buy.

Sorry i was wrong about the year of the leftover engines. The 3 leftover engines are 2007 models. A 40 short is $4425, the 40 long is $4800 and the 50 long is $5000 and all are power trim. A short shaft 40 with power trim is hard to find and would be nice on early Whaler. Tohatsu outboards come with shift,prop,gauges and wiring.

I had a Yamaha 40 hp on my 13'. I had TnT on it and that motor ran about 38 mph with an aluminum prop. I wouldn't change it.

Wow! Thanks for all the input and information. I have quotes from 2 local dealers. Both are for 30 HP long shaft with power TnT, installed. Mercury is $6070 (breakdown is $4795 motor, $300 derig/rig, $975 controls, cables, prop, etc) (25 HP is $500 less). Tohatsu is $4900. Mercury dealer offered $400 for my Yamaha. Mercury has the standard 3-year full ("platinum" ) warranty, plus 2 more years "gold" warranty. Tohatsu is 3-year. Thanks again!

Have you checked with CMC Marine and confirmed that their TNT unit won't fit?
Unless of course you just really want a new engine

As far as I know the CMC PT-130 will fit. But since the CMC unit itself weighs 40 pounds and has a 6" setback, I wasn't so sure about using it. And yes, I like 4-strokes, and would like a new engine. How is your 13 with the 30 Evinrude? Thanks!

You have my vote for a new engine. The weight of my 40 yamaha four stroke does not make a difference. The fuel consumption that got more than split in half, the fact that you can hardly tell the new engine is running (noise and smell) and the power trim and tilt make it all worth it.
With all that said I think you will be disapointed with a 25 if you are going from a 40 2 stroke as far as power is concerned.

I work for the chicago harbors and we have a work barge with twin 40s 4cycle yamaha and they are fanatastic more power than 100 hp johnsons 2 cycle, qhuiet easy to wrk on foroil changes, great motor, tough lower unit

Thanks for the vote! I looked at your page recently. That is a nice looking boat that you have. The Yamaha 40 is what I had been contemplating for months, but the weight was the only problem. Hearing you say that the weight doesn't make a difference is pulling me that way again! Do you mean no difference between the original Evinrude 35 and the Yamaha 40? Wonder how much that 35 weighs? Maybe 150 pounds or so?
Do you think the Mercury 30 (instead of 25) would be disappointing power-wise?
@ Uwdiver- the Yamaha 40 have more power than 100 HP Johnson 2 cycle! How old are the Johnsons? I wonder how my 1993 Yamaha 40 2-stroke compares to a new Yamaha 40 4-stroke? Or a new 30 HP 4-stroke?

My buddy had a Yamaha 40hp four stroke on his 1974 13' whaler. The boat handled fine, ran like a screaming banshi and sat well in the water.
In my opinion, I think the boat will handle the extra weight with no problems.

I know that I also have the fire departments boat with a 40 mercury and my boat can get up on plane with more weight then that one and they have about the same top speed when equally loaded. That tells me that you WILL be disapointed with anything less then 40 hp, four stroke or not. the weight is really not an issue and the fact that you only have to have half the fuel on board makes it even better. With my previous engine I brought 12 gallons of gas on an average trip. Now I bring 5. That means that I took off 42lbs of gas. granted the engine is atleast 50lbs heavier but it really is not that much increase.

Thanks again to everyone for their help. I am still a little torn between a 40 (Yamaha) and a 30 (Mercury). I'm not planning to pull any tubers probably, and no skiers, and will mostly be carrying 2-3 people, sometimes 4 maybe. So, I am leaning toward the 30 (no offense intended towards the 40 guys!). Also, the Mercury dealer is a lot closer than the Yamaha dealer, which is another factor (for current and future services). Happy boating, Lex
