Boston Whaler Hits 3 Million Hours Without Lost Time Incident
Press ReleaseThursday, April 12, 2012, 10:46 AMBoston Whaler announced that its manufacturing facility has reached three million hours without a lost-time accident or illness. The facility has a long history of emphasizing and practicing worker safety in the production of its high-quality, “unsinkable” boats.
“Safety and quality are a part of the Boston Whaler culture, and the extraordinary achievement of three million hours is a testament to that commitment,” said Boston Whaler President Tim Schiek. “Our employees care about what they do, and about the Whaler brand. This record is affirmation of that passion.”
A commitment to best practice, constant technical improvements and open communication has resulted in Boston Whaler’s safety record. All employees must adhere to not only the Company’s strict standards, but also those of external oversight organizations, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). State-of-the-art equipment and technical upgrades ensure the most seamless production possible, and written safety policies and procedures are continually updated based on new equipment, new products or suggestions from employees.
“The care it takes to reach three million hours without a lost-time incident reflects the overall commitment of the Boston Whaler brand to its product and customers,” Schiek said. “Safe practices lead to more efficient production and better quality—all things Whaler owners have come to expect from the brand over the years.”
Boston Whaler also puts great effort into getting all employees involved with its safety programs. Employees can submit their suggestions for how to improve certain aspects of manufacturing safety—from the smallest detailed procedures to general day-to-day processes. As a bonus, employees receive appropriate recognition when their safety proposals have been successfully implemented.
I worked there in the 1980's and they had a deal with the workers. After 30 days without lost time accident they rewarded us with a buffet and t-shirts. After 180? days a Brinks truck pulled up and every body got $300 cash and a 17 Montauk,90 yamaha and trailer was given to one person who's name was pulled. They did it one more time and after 300 days? $300 each and three 13 Whalers were given away. Near the end one of the guys got cut pretty good and we bandaged him up and nothing was said so we did not ruin our record. We must of saved the company a lot of money on insurance for them to reward us like that. Im not sure of the amount of days we had to reach but this is a true story.
