It might very well be time to repower my 11' (again). This time I might go with a new engine because we are starting to use the boat in some different ways. I'm looking at some 20 hp engines and a couple 25s. Forget for a minute that the boat is rated for only 20 hp- my question is more theoretical. Since most 25s are about 50-60 lbs heavier than their 20 hp counterparts, would the 25 show any more power underway? 50 lbs hanging off the back of an 11' boat makes a big difference. On this boat, is the lighter 20 hp engine more quickly to plane? As of now, there would be 2 adults and 1 small child.

Thanks!

I redid an 11 whaler for my son this last year, I found a new in the box 25 2 stroke Yamaha, the engine weight was 106 lbs, however it is manual and no battery is used, When I redid the boat I also raised the transom one inch this does two things, allows for a teleflex steering to clear the rear lifting rings, and puts the engine at the correct height while resting on the transom. I then through bolted the engine in place. I had a 11 gallon custom fuel tank built that fits under the front seat, The boat came out very nice and get a lot of complements

To answer the question, I think the extra weight will negate the added 5 hp. Stick with the 20hp.

Thanks for the responses. I am leaning heavily toward the 20 as it seems a better fit. I'm still open to more opinions though.
