I hate to add to the list of Whalers that have been taken, and could possibly be found in the back of an alley, or some other god forsaken place, but just found out this week, my 22 Outrage with the 2006 ETEC never made it to its new owner, somewhere up in Mass.

Short story is, the marina here that i put it on consignment with, sold the boat, then hired a guy, who they say they've used before to transport it. The new owner wanted it flat bedded, all the way back to Mass. So, it departed out of Corpus Christi and has not been seen again. The police have issued a warrant for the guys arrest, IF his name is legit.

I still have the photo's of the 22 in my personal page, and would appreciate any info that I can pass along to the police. I don't know the new owner, but feel for him as I understood through the marine place that actually talked to him and sold the boat, that he had been looking for a boat like mine for a long time.

So, please have a look, and keep your eyes open. I would really hate for a fine boat like that, gutted and pieced out, even though it may al;ready be to late, as the boat left here late Dec.

Duf - As an insurance guy, I'd be interested in who takes the loss on an unusual situation like that - you, the broker or the buyer? Was any transit insurance in place on a deal like that?

honestly, don't have a clue. I would think the guy that purchased it had insurance before he had it transported, and surely the Marine place that hired the transportation dood, ensured he was bonded. Don't know any details, as i turned it entirely over to the consignment place, and frankly, my only envolvement is helping to locate it if at all possible.

Sorry to hear this. I would think that the dealer that sold, and that hired the carrier would be responsible but I am not in that business so don't have a clue. I guess your situation should be a "heads up" to all of us. A good question already posted. Did you get paid in full? Could drag out for awhile. I assume the dealer was paid in full prior to releasing the boat. I know on used machinery, the dealer will not ship it until they are paid in full. They usually ask the buyer to suggest a carrier. If it is a legitimate carrier, they will be bonded. Still the insurance may be a problem. Again, probably not to you, but the dealer and buyer, assuming the dealer has been paid. Sorry situation. Please keep us informed.

Yes, was paid in full, and was entirely out of the loop between the time it was "sold" and arrangements were between the marine place, new owner, and the carrier for the transport. Good point about something we should all be aware of, and is exactly why the 3 Whalers i have purchased, two in Fla, one in Tx, i have driven to pick all the above up myself. Nothing against carriers in general, but frankly never trusted any of my new boats to anyone else but myself. However, now i have learned a lesson on what can happen. Just really hate it for the guy that bought it.

Glad you are out of it, but two questions: Are the consignment folks you were dealing with reputable? I mean do you know them or was it an online deal? Okay three questions. I guess it says always deal with people you know and sometime that doesn't work. There are crooks everywhere. Yours was a super looking boat and I am sure you wanted it to go to an appreciative buyer. I like you and many others hate it for him. But why has this just surfaced? Was shipped in late December?

Wow, I sold one of my earlier boats to a guy in California. I did my due diligence on the sale and payment, but when the carrier arrived to ship cross-country I did not give it a second thought.

For the next Whaler I proceeded to purchase, I did indeed go to pick up the boat myself. I tow myself when I move my household location for work as well.

That said, I see Duf's pictures that this boat had the rare super console. I sure hope that and the sweet new E-tec do not ended up being parted out on Craiglist.

Hoping for the best possible outcome for the new owner and Whaler enthusiasts everywhere!

This kind of stuff just reinforces my poor attitude where trust of this internet is concerned. I am with Duf and others who firmly believe if you want a job done right then you do it yourself. My brother sold a very highly built Off Road Jeep a couple years back and had it flat bedded to the new owner. It left here with giant wheels and brand new tires and arrived at the new owners location with standard wheels and bald tires. He was also out of the loop once he dropped the vehicle off to the carrier but he did have pictures of the vehicle on the flat bed the day it left.

Hope this all turns out well but I will gladly donate a length of 3/4" manilla rope if the culprit is found.

Man, that is too bad. That is a really nice 22.

I had a good experience when I bought my boat from a seller in San Diego. The former owner bought a boat in Eugene, Oregon (about a 4 hour drive, one way for me) at the same time as our transaction. Included in the sale of the boat to me, was the cost of towing the boat to Eugene, where I picked up my new to me boat. I met the truck driver, where he unhooked my boat, then hooked up the 27' Center Console Cuddy. I went my way, and he headed back to San Diego.

All in all, it worked out well for me.

N Padre Island is a VERY small place, and i could easily walk to where the boat was placed for sale. The place i did business with was the ONLY boat marine place on the island, and i have no reason to believe they would have any intentions of doing anything but the right thing. If they are guilty of anything, it may be trusting someone who made an offer to truck the boat to Mass, that obviously had other had other ideas, which is a real shame. On the ref of the rope........why waste good rope on slime?? Sounds like a one way fishing trip to me......... Oh, your right, that requires rope too.....

It was just a charitable offer on the rope Duf. I always keep a good supply on hand in hopes that some day a politician or lawyer might need a necklace!

Sorry Fred, missed answering your question. The boat sold just before Christmas, that was the 88. My 87, which was sold by the same place, sold very late Jan. Not a word of any issues was mentioned to me when i picked up my check for the 2nd boat very early Feb. Earlier this week, got a call from a Corpus Christi Detective, wanting to hook up and ask some questions which of course i did. don't think i was much help, as like i said earlier, had zero involvement with the entire deal. So, i really can't say, what was going on between the place that sold the 88, the buyer, transport company etc. All i know, if it had been me, and my new boat was in Mass, heading to Tx on a flatbed, and didn't show up in a couple of days, i would have been calling out the federallies immediately!!! Of course as also stated, i would have driven up for a final inspection and towed it home myself, which is exactly what i did with my new 88 25 outrage. Flew to Venice Fla, inspected, took a test drive, flew home, and drove out and towed back. A bit more expensive, but worth every penny.
