Hello,

I have a 1972 Katama and a 1972 Johnson 100 HP with no power trim/tilt. I am planing on installing the CMC PT 130, but am concerned how the stearing should be rigged. Currently the Teleflex cable runs through a Clamp block and attaches to the Johnson with 1 bolt through clevis hardware and the stearing arm off the motor. With the CMC unit you end up moving the engine back 6". Problem is that the Clamp block is mounted on the inside of the starboard transom. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to try and use what I have but I'm kind of thinking I may have to go to something like the Teleflex splashwell type mounting kit. Where's the best place to provide an anchoring point for the steering?

Thanks
Jim

Jim,

You can do away with the clamp to hold the steering. I am surprised that they even used it on your model.

The steering cable nut is usually attached to the starboard side of the tilt tube right on the engine bracket. That is how most all of the newer setups are...
Look at your engine... You should have threads on the end of your tilt tube on the starboard side of the engine.

Another alternative is to change over to Hydraulic steering. Again, you would still get rid of that old clamp block system.

Take a close look at many of the photos on this website of members boats. Look at the engine.
Here is an example of my prior Montauk. Look at the large nut that holds the steering cable to the starboard side of the engine.

Chris Thanks,

But unfortunately this is not a newer set up. As I said this is a 1972 Johnson 100HP and the only stearing bracket on the OB is the bracket about 5" long directly center bottem of the engine lower cover. There are no mounting brackets for steering on the OB. That's why I think they set it up with the Clamp block. The Tilt tube is threaded on the Starboard side, and the nut does connect the cable to the tube, with the shaft end of the tube running throught the tube to the steering bracket. One bolt joins the cable to the outboard. Thats why I'm not sure how the engine can be extented back 6" and still try to use this steering set up. Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Jim

Jim,

It sounds like your missing the steering connector.
I can't seem to find a photo of this OMC steering connector at this time.

Do you have any photos of your setup?
That would help a great deal......

I found a photo of an OMC Steering Connector.....
See the attached photo. This may not be the correct part number for your engine but you can get one from your local BRP Dealer or mail order if this is what you are missing.....

The end with the bolt attaches to the engine.
The threaded end connects to the end of the steering cable rod....
