I have a 1998 28' Conquest. I have had a problem with water intrusion into the cabin storage compartments. There was also water that would get underneath the rear berth cushion. I have discovered that my interior cabin windows leak. I have caulked the exterior window trim and it did not stop the problem. The window in the bathroom is the worst, but the other two also leak and I would like to replace all 3.
Is the local B.W. dealer the best place to have this done? Marine Max in Cocoa, FL is the closet Whaler dealer to me. They are land locked and I dont have a trailer, so I'd have to rent one for the job. It's not under warranty, so I will have to pay for it. I know that having work done at a car dealership is usually 2x the price as opposed to using a local reputable garage. Does anyone know of a location in Melbourne Florida where I can have this done. On the water is preferable. I don't have a trailer since I keep my boat on a lift at my house.
It is something you might be able to do yourself...Just how handy do you see yourself? My father did it on our older cruiser. It really is not that difficult, it just is time consuming.
If it is not covered under the warranty than you really do not have to take it to a Whaler dealer, any good boat yard should be able to take care of it for you.
Before you replace the windows make sure that the water isn't coming in from the anchor locker. I have heard of problems with water intrusion into the cabin that were traced to the forward bulkhead. There is a bead of caulk that keeps water that drains into the anchor locker out of the cabin.
Bill, Thanks for the heads up. I had heard that before as well. I will certainly check that out. If it needs caulking in the anchor compartment, that would be in addition to replacing the windows. You can see where the water runs in from the windows, so there is no question that I have to replace them. I suspect that the anchor compartment needs a good caulking as well.
Check out "Final Touch Composites". He runs a mobile repair service from Palm Bay over to Orlando and down to Stuart. He does warranty repairs for Grady, BW and others so he is familiar with the boats. His primary focus is heavy fiberglass damage and repair. But he may be able to help you and or point you in the right direction. It is hard to find people to trust (if you know what I mean). He will come out to your house or marina to do the repair and or give you a bid.
