Having a hard time removing old cable from my 17, engine is a 1993 88hp evinrude. I have been spraying with wd 40 and got it to move a little by rapping with hammer but got nervous and stopped. I also raised and lowered motor hoping that would help...........any advice?
When the cable on my '84 Montauk froze I tried soaking it with WD-40 and heating it with a hair dryer...home remedies I had heard about. Nothing worked. I finally had to cut the cable, leaving about a foot showing where the cable enters the tube. I then used a hammer and a cheap nut-driver to pound the old cable through. The nut-driver acted as a center-punch, and the hex socket kept it from slipping off the cable as I hit it with the hammer. Not a very elegant solution, but it worked.
In any case, you should replace the cable with a new one, because if you manage to get the existing one unstuck, it will only happen again.
