Im in the process of restoring my fathers/grandfathers before that, old whaler. it has a 1983 johnson 50hp motor on it. really hoping it is salvagable and i can save a few bucks, but i know the boat has sat in my fathers back yard for about 5-6 years, but it did run well before then. Im not a big gear head and dont know alot about engines, especially boat motors built before i was born but i am pretty handy and dont mind a little work. Is there any chance this motor could get up and running again? i plan on bringing it to a shop to get professionally looked at, but im in the preocess of getting the trailer road ready before. is there anything i can do/look at/attempt before then? i have a few pictures here.....

not really sure where to start and havent been able to find any information on what to do in this situation. any ideas or thoughts would be greatly greatly appreciated! thank guys!

There's a good chance the motor will be usable, and if you're willing to dive into it, there's no reason to take it to a shop, as you can do all the work yourself. It will be much easier to get going if it was properly put away, but if you don't know that was the case, you'd be smart to rebuild the carbs and replace the fuel filter, and possibly the fuel lines before you fire it up. Carb rebuild kits are about $30 for the parts, and you'll need 3.

If you know the fuel system was completely drained of gas and the motor was fogged, I'd be inclined to just squirt some oil in the plug holes and crank over a couple of times, then reinstall the plugs and fuel up and see if you can get it going on muffs.

You'll find the factory service manual invaluable, so don't hesitate even though it will cost about $65. Stay away from aftermarket manuals - not worth it.

Great thread on Iboats.com. Go to Iboats.com, go to forums, go to engine mfg, go to evinrude/johnson, go to sticky file FAQ's, go to reviving an outboard. I used this to bring back a 1972 Johnson 65 with good results. Do not go and throw gas in it and see if it fires, there's some steps that need to be covered first. Schematics for the motor can be pulled from evinrude.com. Good luck!

awesome thank you guys so much. i plan on cleaning out the carbs, replacing the fuel filter and sparks and fuel line. need to get a new battery and then im hoping this thing fires up. is there anywhere online i can get a diagraml for the engine? just to point out whats what and where things should be

Do not forget to change the water pump. Sitting for so long the pump impeller has taken a set and won't pump the water thru very well. Look at the t-stats as well, will keep from burning up a good engine. Good luck.

Tim,
That engine is only a two cylinder and has 2 carbs, so will only need 2 kits at most.
I would clean carbs, I don' t usually put kits in them just clean them. Kits will not hurt though.
Probably need a kit for fuel pump and new fuel hoses.
Will definitely need a new water pump impeller, but could try getting engine running first, but do not run it for more than a minute if water is not circulating

These engines are bullet proof, redo the carbs, clean out the fuel diaphragm,clean out the fuel lines, replace the plugs and the water pump, check the lower unit oil, get a new battery and crank it up, may need some starting fluid
