Recently we bought a 1991 Montauk, and now we are getting the engine service since the engine has not run a lot in the past 5 years. The engine is a 1991 Johnson 90hp. Up to now the mechanic rebuilt the carburetor, changed all the gas lines in the motor and he changed the water impeller. The engine runs and starts fine but after 1 or 2 minute it’s starts staling and we need to prime the ball. Every minute or so the same thing happens. What could be causing this problem?
He checked out the VRO pump and it seems to be working properly.
Should we change the pump or is there another cure to this problem?

Thx in advance for any help!!

It sounds like you have a problem with your priming bulb (go ahead and replace it and the fuel hose if they're 1991 vintage) or a closed/plugged fuel vent. Your engine is starving for fuel.

I had the same problem with a boat I had and it was the fuel tank vent being clogged. Try running it with the fuel cap open. I would definately replace the fuel l hose and bulb first though

I think the mecanic found the problem. I will know tomorrow when I take it out for the first time.
The problem was with the choke. It was sticking on one cilynder.
thank for all your help!

We just ordered a new VRO pump. we tried another pump just to see if that was the problem and the engine worked great. So hopefully by the end of the week we should have a working boat.
