I am in the staging process of building a wood flip flop seat base and going to use a lot of Mahogany and wanting to know if Z Spar Captains Varnish would be good on this project, if yall have any other suggestions, please let me know, thanx.

MY favorite two days of the week for fishing are TODAY & TOMORROW.

I used Captains on the mahogany trim I made for my Katama last summer. 6 coats total, starting with a thinned coat (50/50), then 75/25, then undiluted varnish for the last 4 coats. Prep seems the most important, followed by a light sanding in between coats. My Katama is stored outside in Charleston (think sun and salt) and the woodwork shows no signs of fade or degradation. I have a teak RPS and have been toying with the idea too, but the Cetol? that the previous owner coated the RPS with is so close a match to the varnished mahogany that at this time, that it's low on my list of priorities.

I've used Z Spar Captains varnish for years with no regrets. I've found it is the choice of professionals, easy to use, with predictable results. Skuff sand between coats with 220 paper. Let each coat dry for 24 hours. With 9-10 coats you can see your reflection in the varnish.
