I had my newly purchased 1998 montauk out today. 1998 evinrude 90hp/OP and had some issues. First, high speed no problem. When going from high speed to cruise the engine starts to make a "pinging"/ "knocking" noise. I have added different types of additives to try to decrease this. Could it be a prop issue or something more involved?
The second isssue is having difficulty getting the shifter to a neutral position. When I finally shift into neutral, sometimes, the engine will rev. Putting it into forward or reverse causes a "clunking" noise. Do you think this is a linkage issue, and if so, is it hard to adjust? Sorry so long of a message.
This may be as simple as the type of prop you're turning. Stainless props are heavy and can cause these types of annoyances. A quick shift into forward or reverse will help with the clunk at any rate.
