I have a 1998 90hp Evinrude Ocean Pro. I am a bit confused about flushing the thing out. I have had Mercs in the past and used the water muffs for flushing with the engine running. The manual is telling me to remove the plug in the back of the engine and flush it with the engine either running or off. Is it OK to use the water muffs instead while running the engine when flushing it?
Many of the newer engines can be flushed without the motor running as long as the manual tells you how to do it.
Most of these newer engines have a hose connection for flushing when running the engine or not so you don't have to use the muffs if that is the case. As long as water is flowing through the engine when it is running.
I owned a 1998 Johnson 175 and I used the muffs on it with the engine running.
For legal reasons, I cannot tell you what to do, but I don't see the difference as long as there is water flowing through the engine.
I would try what your manual suggests. It might be better than the muffs....
If it help any; I have two '03 O/B engines with the washout plugs in the back (I've never used them). I've been using earmuffs for four+ years now with no ill effects. So to answer your question... Yes, IMHO, you can use the muffs.
Side note. The washout plug would come in handy if your boat was moored.
