I have a 88 outrage 18 w a 2003 suzuki 150, DT 150 i believe is the model type. It seems like there is a problem with the throttle linkage, or maybe the actual gears inside the motor. When you put it in gear there is a grinding noise coming from the engine,and it wont shift until you push it forward further. As it is pushed forward more, the grinding becomes louder & worse until it finally catches & jerks into gear. It does this in reverse as well, but not quite as bad. Then when you first go to take off, the RPMs go up, but the boat just squats in the water & speeds up slightly. After it warms up it isnt as bad, but it still struggles to get on plane, even when running light(1/2 tank or less of gas, only 1 other passenger). Do i need trim tabs or a new prop? In regards to the gear shifter, do i need to replace the remote throttle or is this a problem with the transmission?

The throttle arm and cable connection to the motor need to be in the correct position. 

When the throttle is in neutral position, is the motor in neutral? When the throttle is pushed into the forward zone, does the engine go in gear?

(think of a car shifter. Is N really neutral, d really drive, R really reverse)

There is no adjustment of the cable at the shifter. It is all at the engine end. 

The two cables, gear selection and throttle, have adjustable ends that attach to the linkage on the motor. 

You should get a Suzuki service manual (not owners) to adjust the cables at the engine. 

Most engines do not like slow shifts into and out of gear. The noise you hear is the clutch dog slipping. Shift quicker into and out of gear. 

As for performance, a warmed up 2 stroke will run better than a cold one. 

When was the motor last serviced? New plugs? Carbs cleaned? Using fresh or stabilized gas?

If you accelerated slowly from idle, all boats transition from displacement speed to planing with some stern squat and bow rise just before planing. The boat has to climb up the back of a wave the hull creates and get on top of it.  You may want to increase your speed through the transition zone 2800-3400 rpm's to get up onto a plane faster. Once on plane, throttle back to 3500.
