Has been setting for a couple of years. New fuel tank , lines etc.
put it in for a sea trial. Engine runs good but wont tach up. Seems to be only 1/4 throttle but linkage is opening all the way. Any ideas?

Have you checked the carburetor linkage and make sure it's not sticking

Keep in mind that the arm which opens the carb linkage is part of a two part assembly and the taller arm moves the timer base under the flywheel to advance the spark. Both arms move in unison until about 3/4 throttle when the spark advance arm hits the limit screw and stops moving, but the throttle arm is allowed to keep advancing to full throttle, further opening the carbs. If the timer arm is stuck, it will produce the symptoms that you're experiencing.

I am betting that one or more of the main jets in the carbs are blocked. Can be cleaned without removing the carbs, but if done this way, I would expect it possible the problem may return, as there may be more junk in the carb. Ideally carbs should be removed and cleaned completely.
To access jets, remove front half of black air silencer, then remove back half. Bottom center of each carb is a 7/16 brass screw. Remove this, the jet is behind it. Ideally you need a proper screwdriver designed for the jets to remove the jet without damaging either the jet or carb body. If you can remove the jets, clean with carb cleaner and compressed air and look through them to make sure clear.
Can try the half ass approach of not removing the jets andsparying carb cleaner in there and then compressed air to dislodge any dirt. Problem is dirt will most likely remain in carb cavity and re block at a later date.

I had similar experience on my 84 johnson. Your symptoms plus stalling in gear. Had the carbs removed and cleaned and so far so good. I had a lot of crud in the carbs from old fuel lines. Goodl luck.

Also try replacing your spark plugs.

Don't think tach wiring is the issue. Does tach work as it should?
You could try hitting the choke while trying to accelerate - if it picks up, you know it is a fuel delivery issue

Tach wiring isn't the problem with the engine not running properly but you need to get it working.

There are 3 main wires for the tach.
1. Gray = pulse from engine
2. Black = ground
3. Purple = key on power

If your tach still doesn't work then your charging system may be the problem.

Im pretty sure thats the way I have it wired Joe. Ill double ck today. Joe did you mean the charging system could be the problem with the tach or the running problem? Either way we are on our last couple days of vaca will tow her back north and get her ready for spring.
