I have completed the engine change on my 83 17 ft montauk with a Yamaha 90 hp 4 stk. Can anyone that has this set up give me an approx. fuel consumption rate in MPG. I am looking at putting a 15 gal tank in it and I am just curious. Thanks, Kevin

I think you might be dreaming here with any kind of 90 HP....
I would put two 12 gallon tanks just like original. If you don't want to fill one up, then you have that option.

I think it depends on a lot of factors. Whether you're just trolling or waterskiing. How many hours you are the running the boat and at what speed. I use a 24 gallon tank.

Kevin, you can get some idea of mileage from Yamaha's performance bulletins. From looking at a few of them on boats that are fairly similar in weight to your Montauk, I'd guess you're going to get 9 MPG at troll, 6 MPG at cruise, and about 4 MPG at WOT.
If you're replacing a 2-stroke, the mileage at troll should be a ton better, the cruise somewhat better, and the WOT just a little better. Whether you can cut your fuel storage almost in half will depend on how much time you spend in each of those modes, but I agree with the others; get the 26 gallon that's made for the Montauk! You may not need to fill it all the time, but why not give yourself that option?

Thanks for the input. I was thinking the 15 gal. may ease the weight difference between the 2stk and the 4 stk. I fish mostly within 10 miles of fuel and I am more of a cruiser than a WOT guy.

I have a little feed back from my 17 with the DF70.
I trolled at 1.6-2.2 knots (troll brake) for 6 hours last Sat. I previous spent about 4 hour trolling and a little bit of running around w/o trolling at another lake. That burned just under 5 gal.
I don not any more time on the water with this rig.

1979 Montauk with T top Yamaha 90 HP 4 stroke. Depending on whether I am going with the tide or not and with 2 people on board I get 5-6 miles per gallon. That is running 4000 RPM with a speed of 20 MPH and only slowing for no wake zones. I have a 26 gallon fuel tank.
