I have a 1974 13' whaler with 1979 evinrude 35hp 20" shaft. Wondering which jackplate to purchase to run it a little shallower. Was looking at Bob's http://www.bobsmachine.com/Products/j...ni-MMJ.cfm.

Would y'all recommend the standard width or the narrow one. Or something else different?

Thanks!
Doug

Standard width. I bough one of those for my Dad it seemed like the narrow was going to be close for his 15 hp 2-stroke.

With the 5 inch setback and the 4 inch lift, I wonder if this would allow for the use of a 20 inch shaft length on the older 13s?

I used this exact model for my 13. Take a look at my personal page at the last pictures. I went with the narrow, which just works, but if I had it to do over again I'd get the wide.

It looks like Bob's now also has the "pucks" for screw clamp mounting, which they didn't have when I got mine.

John,
I assume you went with both the kentfab and the jackplace to eliminate any issues with the steering? How does the boat run with the new E-Tec 30HP?

To make a short story long: I really wanted a short shaft E-TEC 30, but they only came with tiller steering, and there was no conversion kit at the time (don't know if there is now). I also decided for weight reasons that I wouldn't go with power tilt. Unfortunately, even with the Transdapter the engine was still too low on the transom, and the manual tilt E-TECS use screw clamp mounting, not the standard four-bolt mounting. This meant that to get the engine high enough I needed a jack plate. Knowing what I know know I'd get power tilt and no jack plate.

As for the engine: fantastic. Speed tops out at 30 or 31 I think, but speeds not that important to me. All other aspects--fast starts, low oil and gas use, low maintenance--are what appeal most to me.

Thanks John,
When i get my 13 finished the E-Tec 30HP is my engine of choice if the old Evinrude is a DOA. I do wish they would port the I-Command down to the lower HP engines.

Thanks for the replys, big help from all that responded! I checked out your pictures thegage. Nice example of it in action. I'll pickup the standard jackplate. I'm going to order those pucks too.

Do you know if I will have to drill new holes?

Blake,
Don't plan to give up on the engine, at least not until i finish the boat and get it to the mechanic.
