I was clocked at over 44 knots by the Palm Beach County Marine Patrol in the Intracoastal waterway. I was by myself just having fun when they came up on me. They stopped me and I opened all my hatches and welcomed them to board. They declined and just wanted to tell me they couldn't beleive I could go so fast. After a few words they told me maybe they need to re-power. I told them you caught up with me and they said some boats get away from them. I thanked them for being courtious and wished them well.

It's nice when they are courteous like that. The coast guard sometimes get a bad rap, but one can only imagine the crap they deal with on a day to day basis. When it all comes down to it, they are trying to keep us safe with the inspections. I was boarded this summer by the coast guard, and since I was cooperative they were more than friendly.

I finally am dusting off my whaler and fishing in her tomorrow to start the season, can't wait!!

I was boarded once because two of my kids were sitting on the gunshale with their feet between the bow rail. The officer gave them free ice cream coupons and told me that was against the law.

I was boarded once for fishing near Long Beach (HSK).
I took about 10 min. It was discovered that my throw-able cushion did not have a proper tag. I was warned that if I was found a 2nd time w/o the proper tag I would be cited.

I have never been boarded, but then the Marine patrol near my house runs a 19 Justice. They are usually too busy chasing jet skis, wake boarding boats and checking the pontoon party boats

I have been boarded by the Coast Guard once in my entire boating life. I lived at Freeport TX for 20 years and spent at least 3 days a week fishing in the bays and Brazos river as well as trips offshore out to 30 miles. The day before I would go offshore, I would get whoever was going with me, usually one of the guys I worked with, or later, my son, and we would use a cast net to gather mullet for the bait.

I had a friend of mine with me getting bait like this one day, and after filling all the ice chests and bait well with mullet, he suggested we go out to the jetty area at the mouth of the Brazos into the gulf and use some light tackle rigs to try and catch some ribbonfish for trolling. We went out the jettys and were working along the rocks using little shrimp caught earlier in the day with the castnet to successfully catch ribbonfish and some piggy-perch for variety in bait.

AS we were fishing and drifting off the beach and rocks, we didn't pay much attention to the large ship traffic through the jettys, and suddenly,(it seemed), a 60 foot coast guard cutter appeared around the end of the jettys and we heard a hailer from the cutter, "Whaler prepare to be boarded, we are the US Coast Guard and grab the line thrown and cleat it in preparation!"

Now we were in a 17' Montauk, and we were amazed that a Coast Guard ship of this size was going to attempt to send personnel 15-20' down a rope ladder into our little boat, but that's exactly what they did! In short order, 3 US Coast Guard Officers were standing on the deck of the little Montauk, and 1 officer took the lead in counting our life jackets, checking emergency equipment, and the registration papers of my boat.

All this took about 5 minutes or so, and the other 2 officers just stood on the deck and didn't say a word, apparently observing the inspecting officers work. After the inspector had filled out the three page vessel inspection form and I had signed and recieved it, the inspector handed the 2 copies left to one of the 2 guys observing and said " OK, I think that does it!"

The Observers looked at each other and one of them shook his hand and said "Congratulations, that was all you had left, you are now the captain sir!"

The group shook hands with us and thanked us for our cooperation and help with the final inspection needed for this officers promotion from leutenant, and I was completely dumbfounded! I asked the officers what had made them decide to use my boat for this boarding and the newly - promoted captain replied " I saw you were on a Whaler in the boat class I needed for the required inspection, and I knew I could board it without worrying about overloading it from the cutter. All the the other boats we have seen today in the 16-20 foot boat category have not looked to be stable enough for us to board without capsizing it!"

So, that's how I met the new captain of the US Coast Guard station at Freeport in about 1993.

Recently a Fish and Game (marine patrol) boat came over to me while I was fishing. I didn't have any fish on board and I told him so. He laughed and told me he just wanted to commenton the nice woodwork on my 13 footer. I appreciated the comment, but I have been hassled in the past. but not on a whaler.

The DNR police around us drive 18 Outrages. I guess if whalers are good enough for them, they're good enough for me too!

Zap and bmw90w, how's the water level on lake Lanier??

44kts=50.6mph....that's pretty fast for a 15' Whaler.

Thats good to hear. -10 to -12 feet low is much better than the -17 feet low you guys were at just a few short years ago.

About 10 years ago I was staying at my friend house in the keys with my wife. We decided to have steak and lobster for dinner, So we sent the wife's to the store for the steaks and trimmings for dinner, meanwhile my friend and I went after the lobster. We were diving for about an hour and had 7 nice bugs on board. We were taking a break on his boat when in the distance we saw the marine patrol coming toward us. He was about our age maybe a little younger. He states "How's it going any lobster?" I said yes we had 7 and they were all legal, He then asked to see our licenses I had mine on the dash, meanwhile my friend went to his cabin to look for his. My friend comes back with 5 different licenses all expired He tells the officer" Look I have my 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 but no 2002 I just can not find it. I quickly replied" John you told me you are never buying a license again since you never get checked" The officer just laugh and let us go...
